The Downward Facing Dog Pose is called an inversion pose which is usually used in a series of poses, such as the Sun Salutation. It is assumed that the name comes from the way that a dog looks when it is stretching.

Why the Downward Facing Dog Pose

What the Downward Facing Dog Pose (Sanskrit: ADHO MUKHA SHVANASANA) is meant to do for you.

This pose is great for stretching your hamstring muscles as well as your calves. It also is good for strengthening your shoulders.

If you have any injuries (recent or chronic), proceed with extreme caution. Do not cause yourself any pain.

Doing the Downward Facing Dog Pose

  1. From the Table pose, tuck your feet under you, bending over, press your hands to the mat, and lift your hips towards the ceiling.
  2. Be sure that your fingers are spread out with your index finger pointing forward and your hands under your shoulders.
  3. Straighten your arms, but don’t lock them. Press your hips up and back. Push your chest towards your thighs and lift up your tailbone so that your spine is kept straight.
