The crack between the parents and younger generation is swelling due to which the connection is deteriorating. The children must remember that since the time of their birth their parents have looked after their needs and wants. Parents have struggled a great deal in order to bring them up, keeping awake during the nights to cater to the needs of their children. Children should remember that the achievements which they have achieved in their lives are a direct result of their parents’ efforts.

There are a few needs that must be taken care of during the old age. Those annoying behaviors from an old and sick parent are not deliberate so we must understand that such behavior comes naturally with old age. Firstly, physical needs like proper food and medicines at regular intervals, accompanying them for a walk and so on. Secondly, monetary needs, like arranging for their monthly expenditures, managing their bank accounts and other monetary transactions. Thirdly, sensitive needs, like taking out time to talk to them, or making them feel valuable by handing over tasks which they can do easily like cutting vegetables or taking care of thechildren.

Children must remember that their aging parents also have their social needs like attending functions, visiting temples, or travelling to meet their relatives and friends. So must take care of all their needs as this would offer them an inner relief that often goes missing in the course of the old age.

Experts from UdhavumUllangalIllam say that if at times your elderly parents give advice on money matters, career or their social contacts, listen to them attentively as it would make them feel respected and loved. Do not let them feel that their advice is being ignored.

Last but not least, always keep in mind that if your health fails then you won’t be able to continue to care for your parent. So it’s important for you to take care of yourself too.
