Update January 4, 2019: The extensions are now available through the official channels. The Google Chrome Extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/rise%20notifications The Mozilla Firefox Extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/rise-notifications/ The Mozilla Firefox for Android Extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/rise-notifications-for-android/ Microsoft Edge: Microsoft no longer accepts extensions to be added to the Microsoft Store, but it is going to change Edge into a Chromium-based browser which would allow it to work with the Chrome extension. Until then, you can keep using the Edge extension as described in this article.

Introduction

After several months of work, I am happy to announce to the RISE community a brand new app — the RISE browser extension! The RISE browser extension is a notification app that runs on the background of your browser. With this app, you can follow any RISE address you like. The extension will alert you with a near real-time (< 60 seconds) notification whenever RISE is sent to (or from) the RISE addresses you are following. This does not only involve payments, but also actions like voting and registering a delegate or a second passphrase.

The final hands are being laid on the extensions before they are sent out to be reviewed by Google, Mozilla and Microsoft. When approved (hopefully, within the coming months), they will be added to the official stores and channels, after which they can be installed like any other browser extension, right from inside your browser.

But you do not have to wait — you can use them right now! This guide shows you how to get a preview of this new app.

Installation

Installing an extension is normally done by searching on Google Chrome Web Store, Opera Store, Mozilla Add-ons or the Microsoft Store for the correct extension and then clicking “Add” or “Install”. This guide shows the manual way to install extensions.

Requirements:

  • A program that can unpack a zip file (e.g. 7-Zip, PeaZip or iZip for Mac OS)
  • A browser that supports extensions

Currently, there are browser extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Installing is easy. It is simply downloading the extension’s code and then loading the code into the browser of your choice.

Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers

Opera and Vivaldi give the best experience. If you are using Google Chrome, it will show a warning at the beginning that “extensions are running in developer mode” which you can close. If you use Opera or Vivaldi you will not get this message.

Step 1: Click on the link here to download the extension’s zip file. Open the zip file and extract the contents to any folder you like. For example, if you extracted to the folder C:/extension, then you should now have the folder C:/extension/rise-notifier-browser-extension-master. This is the extension’s folder.

Loading the extension into Google Chrome (steps 2 to 6)

Step 2: In Google Chrome and Chromium, open the Extensions screen by typing in the address bar chrome://extensions and pressing Enter. (For Opera, use opera://extensions and for Vivaldi, visit vivaldi://extensions)

Step 3: Enable “Developer mode”.

Step 4: Click on “Load unpacked”.

Step 5: Select the extension’s folder (from step 1) and click “OK”. Awesome! You should now see the RISE Notifications extension on the Extensions screen.

Step 6: Disable “Developer mode”.

Next to the address bar, you should see the beautiful RISE logo. If you hover over it, it should show “RISE Notifications” and if you click on it, you will be greeted with a popup screen. You can proceed with part 2 of this article to set up and customize the extension.

Mozilla Firefox and Firefox-based browsers

Unlike the other extensions, the preview of the Firefox extension can only be installed for one session. Every time Firefox is opened, you will have to repeat steps 2 to 4 to load the extension and Firefox also clears all data from the RISE extension when the browser is closed.

Step 1: Click on the link here to download the extension’s zip file. Open the zip file and extract the contents to any folder you like. For example, if you extracted to the folder C:/extension, then you should now have the folder C:/extension/rise-notifier-browser-extension-firefox-master. This is the extension’s folder.

Loading the extension into Firefox (steps 2 to 4)

Step 2: Open your browser and type in the address bar about:debugging

Step 3: Click on “Load Temporary Add-on…”.

Step 4: Select the extension’s folder (from step 1) and go inside that folder. Look for a file named manifest.json; select this file and click “Open”.

That’s it! You should see the default extension icon (which looks like a puzzle piece) on the address bar. If you hover over it, it should show “RISE Notifications” and if you click on it, you will be greeted with a popup screen. You can proceed with part 2 of this article to set up and customize the extension.

Microsoft Edge

The Microsoft Edge extension will run almost the same as if it was installed via the official Microsoft Store, except for the warning Edge gives you at the start that an “extension from unknown sources” is installed.

Step 1: Click on the link here to download the extension’s zip file. Open the zip file and extract the contents to any folder you like. For example, if you extracted to the folder C:/extension, then you should now have the folder C:/extension/rise-notifier-browser-extension-edge-master. This is the extension’s folder.

Loading the extension into Edge (steps 2 to 5)

Step 2: Click on the Menu button (the button with ···).

Step 3: Click on “Extensions”.

Step 4: Scroll all the way down and click on “Load extension”.

Step 5: Select the extension’s folder (from step 1) and click “Select folder”.

All done! You should see the default extension icon (which looks like a puzzle piece) on the address bar. If you hover over it, it should show “RISE Notifications” and if you click on it, you will be greeted with a popup screen. You can proceed with part 2 of this article to set up and customize the extension.
