Imagine a room buzzing with shared experiences, diverse perspectives, and a collective hunger to harness technology for social good. That’s exactly what unfolded at the “Nairobi UnConference: Beyond Data, Beyond Borders,” a collaborative event hosted by GlobalGiving, Dasra, Adeso, Project Tech4Dev, The Agency Fund and Lets Create Africa (LCA).

This wasn’t your typical conference. It was an open space, an unconference, where over 100 representatives from nonprofits, social enterprises, and service providers came together to break free from silos and forge connections. The goal? To share challenges, explore solutions, and ignite a collaborative spirit around data-driven learning for social impact.

The event kicked off with insightful talks on leveraging technology and data for learning. From embracing experimentation to harnessing the potential of AI-enabled chatbots, participants delved into innovative approaches to drive social impact. Streamlining data management emerged as a crucial aspect, ensuring organisations can derive meaningful insights to inform their programs effectively.

Key Takeaways:

  • Learning through Experimentation: We learned that data doesn’t always provide clear answers. Instead, it’s a springboard for experimentation, allowing us to test, iterate, and refine our approaches.
  • Data for Storytelling: Data isn’t just about numbers; it’s about human stories. By weaving data into compelling narratives, we can connect with stakeholders, inspire action, and amplify impact.
  • AI for Good: Artificial intelligence holds immense potential for social impact, from chatbots offering support to vulnerable communities to algorithms predicting disease outbreaks. However, ethical considerations and responsible use are paramount.
  • Data Democratisation: Empowering local communities to collect, analyse, and use data for their own development is crucial. This requires capacity building, ensuring data ownership, and respecting local contexts.
  • Collaboration is key: No single organisation can solve complex social challenges alone. By working together, sharing resources and expertise, we can unlock the true power of data for the collective good.
  • Innovation through Data: Embracing technology and data-driven approaches is essential for unlocking new possibilities in the social sector. From AI-enabled solutions to streamlined data management, nonprofits have explored innovative strategies to enhance program effectiveness and scalability.
  • Ethical Considerations: Discussions highlighted the importance of ethical data practices and the need to ensure data sovereignty and privacy, especially in contexts where power imbalances exist. Building trust and accountability within the sector is fundamental to driving sustainable impact.

Actionable Insights:

  • Start small, experiment often: Don’t wait for perfect data. Use it to inform your work, test assumptions, and refine your approach.
  • Find your story: Look for the human element within your data. Use data-driven insights to craft compelling narratives that resonate with your audience.
  • Explore responsible AI: Research and implement AI tools ethically, ensuring transparency, accountability, and respect for individual rights.
  • Build data literacy: Equip your team and community with the skills to collect, analyse, and interpret data effectively.
  • Seek collaboration: Connect with other organisations working on similar challenges. Share resources, expertise, and learn from each other’s successes and failures.

The Nairobi UnConference wasn’t just an event; it was a catalyst for change. It proved that by moving beyond data, beyond borders, and embracing collaboration, we can unlock the immense potential of technology to create a more just and equitable world.
