The Man Who Unleashed The Dragon

Stieg Larsson died of a heart attack on 9 November, 2004.

Not the start you were expecting, eh? Sadly, it’s the truth. And that’s why, the work which he’s remembered for — The Millennium Series — was published posthumously. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo came out in 2005, The Girl Who Played with Fire came out in 2006, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest came out in 2007.

He unleashed the world’s most badass computer hacker on us.

Lisbeth Salander. Child sexual abuse survivor. Tattoo/piercing lover. A girl with a deeply troubling past, not able to fit into ‘society’s’ scheme of things. If you think she’s a poor, troubled child who can’t fend for herself — you are so mistaken. Lisbeth Salander can take good care of herself, and the people she likes (or manages to like).

And a rather interesting magazine publisher.

Mikael Blomkvist is the publisher of Swedish political magazine, Millennium, and in the first book (Dragon Tattoo) he loses a libel case involving allegations about billionaire industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerström. After that, his life takes unexpected turn after unexpected turn, till he ends up crossing paths with Lisbeth Salander. Then his life takes a u-turn (well almost).

They make for the oddest, yet most endearing fictional ‘couple’, if you can call them that. And they take us through all 3 stories.

In Stieg Larsson’s memory at least, I urge you to read the Millennium series. It’s probably the most interesting trilogy I’ve read… this side of the millennium (no pun intended). And Larsson, I hope you’re resting in peace.
