In Shopify store, you can allow your users to easily login using Fingerpirnt, Touch Id, Face Id or Device Ping using app Simplify My Loginhttps://apps.shopify.com/login-using-otp
(P.S. — I am the developer of this app)

This means that Shopify customers will never need to remember their Email/Password to login. This will in turn reduce login friction and increase conversion for your Store customers.

Let me walk you through the entire flow. There are two parts to this once you install the app —
- Register your device credentials (This step is required only once)
- Login using your device

Registering your device

Once you install the Simplify My Login app (https://apps.shopify.com/login-using-otp)

You should see the “Register device for login” button once you navigate to your Account page (you need to login once to reach this page) —
Sample account page link — https://MY-STORE.com/account

Note: If your device does not support Device based login credentials, then you will not see a “Register device for login” button. Instead you will see a message — “This device is not supported.” . (Though all smartphones and most laptops do support device based authentication)

Once you click the “Register device for login” button you should see a prompt to enter your device based credentials —

Note: This prompt will look different on different devices. The above is how it looks on my Android device

Now user can use Touch Id, Face Id or Device pin to register their credentials.

Post that the Account page should be updated with credential information under the “Login using your device” section.

This concludes the one time Registration flow. User can now use their Device based login credentials to Login into the Shopify store

Login using your device

Once registration is successful, next time Login will be a breeze.

Sample Shopify login page URL — https://MY-STORE.com/account/login

User will see a button to “Login with device as <my_email_address>” . This button will not be visible until user register’s their device credentials on Account page

Now user will click on the “Login with device as <my_email_address>” button.

On clicking user will see a popup to use Touch Id, Face Id or Device Pin. Once user provides the same, they will be logged into the store.

Conclusion

I believe this is the future of authentication on web and soon we will start seeing more and more websites adopting this easy login method.

In fact the app Simplify my Login (https://apps.shopify.com/login-using-otp) supports many other Login methods like —

  • Phone number and one time verification code
  • Google Sign In
  • Facebook Sign In
