Come one, come all — this is your first challenge of the new year and what shall we dive into for January, good people? We will explore the world of microfiction. For the next six all-inclusive challenges, “Microfiction is our addiction.” We’ve been through so much during the past year and I do not foresee much of it halting anytime soon, so I believe we should get just a little more creative with our words — release what we have in us in a positive way. And, why not?

Microfiction:

It’s a subset of flash fiction — those super short stories typically told in 1,000 words or less. Definitions vary, but for the most part, microfiction is any story told in 300 words or less, and could even be as short as a few words. (At Microfiction Monday Magazine, I use the limit of 100 words.

The challenge: I want to see what you can do with the topic of “underwater experiments” using 100 words or less. Want to talk about furless pandas drowning? Go for it! You’ve got an idea brewing in your brain about two brothers creating an underwater science lab — let it rip! Interested in stirring up a tale of two mermaids and their intergalactic overseer who decides to create a new empire “under the sea”? Get it crackin’, Captain! I am here for your creative genius!

An example:

Boris had twenty-five seconds to escape from the chains that bound him. The blindfold was never an issue — it was always the key. Sometimes, it’d slip. Others, his fingers just couldn’t grip it in time. He had no problem holding his breath — at this, he was the state champion. Could he unlock the padlock to the chains, swim to the top of the surface, remove his blindfold, and tell the crowd how he did it?

Five seconds remaining. 5, 4, 3 . . .

Let’s get super creative, writers!
