The Pup Who Rescued Me

How Writing for Children Helped Me Heal

For a long time, I didn’t write for children.
I didn’t write for grownups either.
In fact, I barely wrote at all.

I was too busy surviving — caught in the middle of change after change, trying to hold it all together while something soft inside me quietly disappeared. That “something soft” was imagination, perhaps. Or wonder. Or the voice that once believed magic was real.

I didn’t know I missed it… until I met Sauli.

Sauli wasn’t (isn’t) just a dog. She was (is) a rescue — a little being with a wild spirit and eyes that told stories without words. The kind of companion who didn’t care if you were messy or moody or didn’t feel like pretending to be okay.

She just sat beside me, tail curled, heart open — reminding me I was never really alone.
That was enough to stir something in me.
Something old.
Something tender.
