Wedding the Spirits: Comparing Human and Masquerade Marriages
Customs and traditions form the bedrock of many cultures around the world. No ancient city in my country lacks a traditional stronghold, deeply rooted in the veneration of ancient deities, gods, and goddesses.
Throughout my life, I have had the privilege of witnessing two weddings of the spirits. One occurred during my primary school years, and the other during a Christmas visit to my hometown in 1993. It might surprise you to learn that masquerades are ceremonially married into towns. In Eastern Nigeria, this is considered one of the most sacred marriage ceremonies tied to ancient traditions.
My elder brother once led the traditional masquerade group in our hometown. Under his leadership, I became familiar with the marriage of spirits. I distinctly remember the second ceremony, which took place in Isikwu-Ato, a community fondly known as the “town of the three Big-Headed Masquerades.” This town is rich in masquerade tradition, and their masquerades are known for their fidelity in marriage.
