The AI war is ON! Google Bard Vs OpenAI ChatGPT
Google’s Bard business model is not exactly to compete against ChatGPT but to assist Google search with logical answers. Search ads form 60% of Google’s revenue, so obviously, they don’t want to kill it. ChatGPT is a language generation model, while Bard is a text completion model. Both have their own strengths and limitations and can be successful in their respective domains.
Bard is still in the testing stage while ChatGPT has passed Google’s coding interview for the level 3 engineer test with a $183k salary package. This means ChatGPT easily passes “technical level” questions but struggles to answer “logical questions”. For example -
- How many alphabets does the English language have — this is a Google search engine answer.
- Is English easier to learn than Chinese for a Chinese resident? — This is where Bard as an AI steps in to assist Google search. Bard will provide logical reasoning on why it’s easier for a Chinese person to learn English.
So Google has a search engine ‘Chrome’ along with ‘Bard’ as an AI — its search engine comes with AI tools, whereas ChatGPT lacks a search engine. This is where MS steps in with a multi-billion dollar investment in ChatGPT. Microsoft is about to bring the AI chatbot ChatGPT to its search engine “Bing”. Once this is out in the market people will flock to use it for user experience. Google will closely observe how people use it, its drawbacks and challenges, how much people are willing to pay — and will attempt to create a better version for ‘Bard’.
Not to forget, Google has a slight upper hand here. Currently, Google commands 85% of the global search market, while Bing only accounts for 9%.
- Bard will have access to the most up-to-date information and will be able to deliver more up-to-date information
- This will help Bard to deliver more reliable facts to consumers.
Next, ChatGPT can answer in text form, and generate speeches, songs, research articles, school essays, etc — But the ultimate aim of chatbots should be to replace 100s of weblinks into one definitive answer. This is where ChatGPT lags behind, opening up a realm of risk and uncertainty, including providing false information on topics such as racism, ageism, and sexism Google’s Bard is very keen to avoid this error — and is much more secretive and cautious about them.
Bard is built on a lightweight version of “LaMDA” that can assist in a logical definitive answer which ChatGPT can’t. Bard can easily and effortlessly combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge in its language model. This helps you- as a user- to quickly understand the larger perspective and learn more from search engines.
However, its full potential is yet to be tested…. But …. Hold on…. Not done yet …..
Microsoft is planning to integrate ChatGPT into its Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other Office apps. 23% of Microsoft’s revenue comes from Office products, compared to the 6% from ads on Bing. So even this is a bigger boon for Microsoft as it cements its number 1 spot for office/productivity applications.
Google has also invested $400 million in “Anthropic”- an AI startup that’s considered a rival for ChatGPT. Here Anthropic will use Google’s cloud computing service to generate text and art — within seconds …. yes , within seconds. Anthropic’s language model assistant, Claude, will be under Google Incorp shortly.
This means, Google will not just be a chatbot or search engine but a bigger driver of technological change, creating new opportunities for growth and improved services across all industries. So you as a user, as an entrepreneur can tap into a reliable and responsible AI cloud service to build your business rapidly.
This opens a new era of Business automation
- ChatGPT + MS Bing versus Google search + Bard
- ChatGPT + MS Word versus Google docs + Bard
- ChatGPT + MS Powerpoint versus Google slide + Bard
- ChatGPT + MS Excel versus Google sheets + Bard
- ChatGPT + MS Outlook versus Google mail + Bard
Meanwhile, Google’s DeepMind is releasing its own chatbot version called “sparrow” soon. It is believed to deliver accurate information along with citing specific sources of information — which ChatGPT lacks.
So the real competition is between Microsoft and Google in getting access to advanced AI systems.
Ultimately, Google has bigger and better talent and funds to compete
