AirGap is a wallet that offers the convenience of a software wallet while also providing the security of a hardware wallet. A cold wallet that is convenient, safe, and meets the most stringent security requirements of a modern cryptocurrency user.

During our fourth anniversary, we presented an overview of our accomplishments in the first four years, followed by a discussion of some integrations we would like to accomplish in the following year.

Let’s evaluate how well we’ve achieved our targets

The first thing on the list was extended support of the Tezos ecosystem’s fungible and non-fungible Tokens and support for in-app swaps powered by decentralized exchanges on Tezos. About two weeks after we announced our targets, we updated AirGap Wallet to version 3.9.0, which came with support for the Quipuswap, a decentralized exchange built on the Tezos network. It offers an interface for the exchange of FA2/1.2 tokens and XTZ in a seamless manner.

On the 22nd of November 2021, we announced the support of generic FA2/1.2 tokens on version 3.13.0. With this feature, AirGap automatically supports all fungible tokens on the tezos network. And things didn’t take long till we had the next announcement in the pipeline; On the 16th of December 2021, we also announced the support for Tezos-based non-fungible tokens.

The second integration we planned was to introduce Segwit, a cheaper, faster, and more scalable upgrade to the bitcoin legacy. This feature was integrated into version 3.11.0 and was announced on the 12th of October 2021 alongside the improved secret import and entropy collection via dice rolls and the new secure mnemonic import feature which was the third and fourth target on the list.

We fulfilled all of our planned features before the year 2021 came to a close. We went ahead and implemented several other features and integrations even though they had not been on our initial bucket list.

The following is a list of further integrations that we decided to undertake.

The list above only covers the major development we did at AirGap. Other minor improvements such as a listing of tokens and network upgrades are not included.

One of the most notable integrations we had was the MetaMask one. Metamask is by far the most popular wallet in the crypto space. MetaMask makes it easy and seamless to interact with web3. This integration aligns with one of our goals, which is to make the Vault more interoperable, thereby not limiting our users to only the AirGap wallet. The integration has also improved our followership on Twitter and it makes AirGap a more perfect wallet for Defi. It is also worth noting that the Vault is compatible with Sparrow Wallet, Blue Wallet, and Specter Wallet.

Roadmap and planned Features

Our wallet will continue to undergo improvements, to increase support for new cryptos and introduce a plethora of new features that are in high demand. Security has been and will continue to be our primary concern. However, another one of our goals is to expose people to the offline feature of the Vault. In one year, we intend to implement a few adjustments that will improve not only the level of security but also the level of usability. It is important to note that this list is in no way exhaustive because we intend to keep working to enhance AirGap.

  • Introduce a plugin system that improves the security of the private key which will subsequently make it possible to easily integrate new protocols through community pull requests.
  • Improve the experience of AirGap Vault when pairing it with QR-based wallets like MetaMask or BlueWallet.
  • Similar to Quipuswap, we will add one more DEX (Plenty Defi) to the exchange tab to provide an additional option for easy and seamless swapping of FA2/FA1.2 tokens and XTZ.
  • Support for Sirius token.
  • After integrating Sapling V1, we found a vulnerability in the contract, and as a result, we decided to discontinue it without any user incurring a loss. Integration of Sapling V2 and support for multiple assets under the Sapling umbrella are both in our roadmap. Users of AirGap will be able to conduct transactions while maintaining their privacy thanks to this feature.
  • Restructure the app so it becomes clearer which accounts belong to which secret
  • Improve the onboarding process to differentiate offline and online Vaults to provide users with feedback to improve their security.
  • Run checks in the Vault and tell users what they can do to improve their security.
  • Add support for SeedXOR and Hamming Backups
  • Add support for SSKR
  • Support for languages such as Russian, Chinese, and Spanish.

Make AirGap more accessible

To make our solution more accessible to people around the globe we started to translate our step-by-step guide with the help of our community into various languages, among those are French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. If you can help us translate it into other languages please let us know.

We do more than just AirGap

The company behind AirGap is Papers AG. We’ve dedicated over ten years to developing secure, mobile-first software embracing paradigm-shifting technologies like blockchain to provide a more distributed, secure, and accessible future of human interaction. Some of our other solutions include

Acurast: Acurast is a decentralized oracle network that provides real-world data and off-chain computation to smart contracts on the blockchain. Smart contracts are pre-specified agreements on the blockchain that evaluate information and automatically execute when certain conditions are met.

Youves: Youves is a decentralized, non-custodial, and self-governed platform for the creation and management of synthetic assets built on the tezos network.

Spire: is a lightweight Beacon-enabled Browser Extension for interacting with Tezos dApps. dApp users can use Spire as a Browser Extension wallet, connect it to a Ledger hardware wallet or any of the other Beacon-compatible wallets and use Spire to interact with dApps.

Beacon: allows you to seamlessly connect your Tezos wallet with an application and interact with it. Requests from the dApp can be signed on a mobile, desktop, hardware wallet, or browser extension.

Ecoo: Earmarked funds for different purposes like a coin for local businesses, or festivals. Ecoo is built on the Tezos blockchain.

What’s your feedback on AirGap?

It has been the feedback we have gotten from the community in the past four years that has been a major source of our continued progress. We’ve made significant improvements to AirGap as a result of it.

We decided to compile a few tweets from our users. We are happy with the feedback we are getting and we’ll continue to improve on our solution.

As part of our continued effort to improve our solution based on your feedback, we’ve created a survey to get your opinion on what is missing in AirGap and how we can improve it. We appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey and sharing your thoughts with us. Therefore, we are also giving away a fan package, consisting of the 2 AirGap Recovery Plates (made out of 304-grade stainless steel), an engraving pen, and an AirGap Sticker to people who provide us with high-quality responses.
