As the VP Human Resources Porsche Cars North America, Dr. Erika Burk is leading people to pursue their passion.

DR. ERIKA BURK

We’ve all heard it said that if you choose a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Although that is a nice sentiment, my advice to those beginning a new venture is to pursue your passion because you will, in fact, have to work — and often both harder and smarter than the competition, especially as an entrepreneur. By pursuing your passion, you can rest assured that the result is worth the effort.

My passion is helping people. The work I do is in service and support of the people around me, and keeping that front and center ensures I remain fueled for success. I encourage you to surround yourself with the essence of what drives your passion and pursue it in everything you do: the big things and the small things. Write it down. Keep a journal and revisit your words often. While your mission and vision may evolve, your passion — that thing that drives you — will only grow, and you will grow along with it.

Allowing yourself to be vulnerable provides opportunity to connect, inspire and change the world around you — much like the founder duo Carol and Heming are doing through their company, Positively Different. This reminds me of the advice from Brene Brown, “You either walk inside your story and own it or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.” If you’re looking for perspective on the power of vulnerability and using your own experiences to grow your influence and leadership, I recommend Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live by Brene Brown.

As part of The Founders Initiative, I’ve put forward Carol Masiclat & Heming Luan, co-authors of a book “Different! Awesome!” that aims to grow acceptance of neurodiversity by sharing a child’s view of autism in a colourful and engaging way. The passion for this project stems from very personal experiences that have driven the vision to create an inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming world.
