What They *Should* Say Is ‘You Should Never Meet Your Readers’

You may not like your stories much after that

So, like, what’s going on here? Photo by 愚木混株 cdd20 on Unsplash

5 minutes after I write that, a lady comes by.

She says, ‘Hey! I read your stories!’

My stories? I say.

‘Yeah! Onna Innernet. Why did you stop?’

What do you mean stop? I say.

‘You know, the soccer game, and how it was all new and amazing to you, watching soccer with your black friend — like, your friend who’s black — and I couldn’t wait to find out, and then it stopped. It just stopped!’

Christ, I mean, it’s a short story, I say. What did you wanna know?

‘Like, how did it feel? Were you scared?’

No, I wasn’t scared. We got stoned. It was nice. Come on. You read it.

‘OK, it was just short.’

Yeah. A short story. Sorry. I know some people don’t like those.

So I just gave her my book, it being a long story and all. Now I wonder wtf is going to be wrong with it.
