How has the past two years changed you?
For us, a lot. We launched Call for Projects 2020 on the very week of the lockdowns here in the Philippines.
Everyone went home. Some tried to work. Some tried to soldier on. Some started new businesses. Some went home to their provinces. Some good friends and colleagues moved on. HIFI changed leadership. Twice. In a year.
But we’re finally back on track.
The Philippines is now emerging from the economic effects of the longest lockdowns in the world. We have are concluding our national elections. Some say we are going back to the “dark ages” in our nation’s history. Some see it as a “new golden era.”
How do you see it?
For us, these are both exciting and scary times, tbh. For local startups, Esquire is anointing it “the golden era for startups in the Philippines.”
We totally agree! There has truly never been a more exciting time than now to be in the startup business. Consider:
- Almost everyone uses digital payments now.
- Online businesses sprouted everywhere, like trendy plantitos & plantitas.
- Cloud kitchens become the new normal fast food.
- Investments in local startups exceed $1 billion, aka unicorn-levels.
