ASO for educational apps: US Top Grossing study

What do you need to make an earning educational app? We have examined the top-5 earning apps in the category “Education” in US App Store and can tell you what keywords they use.

At top-5 category there are totally different programs.

They are:

Yousician — it’s an app that teaches you to play musical instruments such as piano, guitar and ukulele.

ABCmouse.com — a children’s developing app with some interactive games.

Epic! — e-books, audiobooks, tutorial videos and puzzles for children.

Lumosity — games for adults, developing memory, attention and brain’s work.

Blinkist — short extracts from books, summaries of more than 2000 books for 15 minutes.

In overall there are mainly 2 types of applications in the top: learning foreign languages and educational games and apps for children. Together they form 54% of the top-50 most earning apps.

Let’s move back to ASO-analysis for the educational apps. Due to the ASOdesk service’s research the top searches that bring most traffic to apps are connected with their brands and literally repeat their names, e.g. lumosity or yousician. But there are some common searches that can give you a good amount of installs. For example, these are some of them:

• guitar tuner: top-1 — 1112 installs per day
• brain games: top-1 — 1589 installs per day

All the others searches, even such as “kids’ books” and “book summaries”, don’t bring any significant installs.

• Search traffic for the top apps in the category “Education” is associated with mainly brand searches, which mean searching by their names.
• Nevertheless, there are some other searches that can give you a lot of installs. Reaching the top becomes an easy-to-achieve goal.
• All the top-5 applications and most apps in Top-50 use a subscription model of monetization. Tinder and some other examples show that it is the main model of earning — not only for the media but also for the other apps (probably, except games).

• There are only 2 apps among the top-50 earning ones that teach adults special skills — Yousician for playing musical instruments and Aceable Drivers Ed for learning how to drive. This amount seems to be really small and it is possible to teach users much more things. By the way, these 2 apps have the biggest amount of non-brand searches, such as guitar tuner for Yousician and ia driver test app for Aceable Drivers Ed. So you can create your project exactly on this area.
