Universaalin maskienkäytön perusperiaatteet

Tieteellistä kirjallisuutta maskeista ja niiden käytön hyödyistä COVID-19:n hidastamisessa ja pysäyttämisessä on tarjolla valtavasti, mutta tästä huolimatta hallitus ilmoitti sisäministeri Maria Ohisalon suulla 4. toukokuuta järjestämässään tiedostustilaisuudessa vielä selvittävänsä maskien käyttöön liittyviä kysymyksiä.

HUS:in toimitusjohtaja selitti asian hetkessä myöhemmin samana päivänä lähetetyssä Ylen A-studiossa. Maskia tulisi käyttää vähintään ruuhkaisissa jaetuissa tiloissa.

Suomessa maskeista käyty keskustelu on ollut lähes yksinomaan vähättelevää ja maskien käyttöä koskevaa todistusaineistoa ei ole suomalaisasiantuntijoiden ja -virkamiesten tietoon tihkunut yli kaksi kuukautta jatkuneen poikkeustilan aikana. Suomessa maskien vastaiseen rintamaan on osallistunut virkamiesten ja asiantuntijoiden lisäksi joukko yksittäisiä ihmisiä ja joitakin järjestöjä. THL:n pääjohtaja Markku Tervahauta ehti kuitenkin jo toukokuussa ilmaista ajatuksensa ääneen: ehkä kankaiset kasvomaskit voisivat toimia myös Suomessa.

Jopa teholtaan heikoin kangasmaski voi olla suojavaikutukseltaan yksilötasolla 90 prosenttia ja laajasti yhteisöissä käytettynä niiden suojausteho on moninkertainen. Tietoa kangasmaskien käytöstä on tarjolla sekä historiallisten kokemusten että tieteellisen tutkimuksen tasolla.

Kaikki maskien käyttöä koskevat alkuperäisjulkaisut tukevat maskien käyttöä laajasti. Tähän perustuen — muutamaa poikkeusta lukuun ottamatta — kaikki katsaukset, mielipidekirjoitukset ja kommenttiartikkelit päätyvät suosittelemaan laajamittaista maskien käyttöä.

Jo olemassa olevan ja kertyneen tieteellisen näytön — ja varovaisuusperiaatteen nojalla — monet maat ovat suositelleet maskien käyttöä tai jopa asettaneet maskipakon keinoksi hallita epidemiaa eri puolilla maailmaa. Sama on ollut nähtävissä myös Euroopassa, jossa maskien käyttöön on perinteisesti suhtauduttu hihkeästi.

Maskien käytössä ainut haaste on opettaa ja kouluttaa kansalaiset laajamittaisesti käyttämään niitä oikein.

Toivottavasti alla olevista julkaisuista on hyötyä selvitystyöryhmälle.

PubMed-haku sanoilla “COVID 19 mask”. Yhteensä 168 tulosta, joista poimittiin käsin 46 artikkelia sillä perusteella, että julkaisussa on pääfokus kansalaisten maskien käytössä.
