We’re experiencing the rise of thinkers, not doers.

Technology has revolutionized various career paths — and writing has been one of the most impacted.

I’ll be honest. When tools like ChatGPT started becoming useful in the marketing and communications space, I was scared. As a writer by trade, I felt my value instantly decrease. Writing and editing were the foundation of my career, and I started to see that foundation crack before my eyes.

My livelihood was undoubtedly crumbling around me — what did that mean for my career?

Fast forward a bit more and knee-deep into an economic recession later and I found myself at a career crossroads.

If my value to provide and perform work (i.e. writing copy, content) was slowly becoming obsolete, how can I pivot my career to best utilize my skills?

With the advent of AI writing tools, I realized I have the potential to use my accumulated skills and apply them differently. Yes, writing and editing will always be lifelong skills I will continuously use. I’m not ready to die on that hill yet.

It’s how I incorporate AI to streamline my processes and amplify my work to make it stronger that’s going to make all the difference.

Our society is paying employees to think rather than do. Sure, execution is a part of that process, but having the knowledge and the skill behind the robot is what’s going to make “thinkers” more valuable than “doers” in the professional landscape.

The Evolving Role of Writers

The automation of content writing has become increasingly prevalent, leading to the replacement of bottom-tier writing jobs. Believe me, I’ve been there.

However, this doesn’t spell doom for writers.

Instead, it presents an opportunity for them to adapt and evolve. Rather than being replaced, writers need to be given the chance to transition into managerial roles, overseeing and guiding AI, and using it effectively in their writing process.

Writers can harness their unique expertise and their robust understanding of language nuances to ensure AI-generated content aligns with the business objectives and reflects the brand’s voice.

Writing, in its simplest form, can be commoditized with the help of technology.

Unfortunately, the ability to string words together coherently is no longer a rare skill. What truly sets writers apart is their capacity for critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving.

These higher-order cognitive abilities are not easily replicated by AI. Writers who possess these skills become invaluable assets to their organizations because they can provide unique perspectives, craft compelling narratives, and engage readers on a deeper level.

People crave genuine human connection, and writers who can tap into that need are poised to thrive. Organizations are leaning into more casual brand voices to resonate with millennials and Gen Z because they now make up the majority of our population.

It is the “thinkers” who can transcend the limitations of AI-generated content and create work that resonates on an emotional and intellectual level.

Nurturing AI’s Cognitive Abilities

While AI has made significant strides in natural language processing and generation, the ability to train AI to think critically is still an uphill battle.

Machines excel at processing vast amounts of data and identifying patterns, but they lack the human capacity for intuition, empathy, and creativity.

However, this doesn’t mean that AI is an adversary to writers. It can be a powerful tool for enhancing productivity and creativity.

When writers use AI writing tools, they can automate repetitive tasks, such as data analysis and fact-checking, allowing them to focus on ideation and crafting compelling narratives.

As much as it is a tough pill to swallow, it’s the truth — simply being a proficient writer is no longer enough.

Diversifying your writing abilities and acquiring additional competencies can be instrumental in staying relevant and valuable. With that in mind, writers by trade can explore adjacent career paths such as content strategy, digital marketing, or communications management.

By developing a multidisciplinary approach, they can leverage their writing skills in combination with other proficiencies to offer unique value propositions to employers and clients.

The ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to emerging technologies will be the key to long-term success.
