Cannabis Journalism

It has been a whirlwind of a time in cannabis journalism class. We learned so much about the industry, and how to be better journalists, regardless of the topic. Some of the highlights of the week for me were talking with Ry Prichard, Ricardo Baca, and Jake Browne from The Cannabist, a visit to Sweet Grass Kitchen, and a visit to CBDrx. I found talking with the journalists from The Cannabist fascinating because they all had so much insight into the industry, and each had found their own niche. Jake, for example, not only writes for The Cannabist, but also has a lot of side projects such as the “Grow Off” which he hopes will make him more successful. Ry on the other hand works for a concentrate company that won a cannabis cup, and writes in his free time.

One thing that stood out to me was how young some of the people are that dominate the cannabis industry. For example, Hunter, one of the lead growers at CBDrx had only graduated CSU a few years ago, while lots of the employees at Sweet Grass Kitchen couldn’t be older than 30, yet still are able to make an incredible product.

I think one of the reasons that a lot of the talent in this industry is so young is because it was such a clandestine industry until very recently. While the older generation has a stigma against it, the younger generation has embraced cannabis with open arms. Overall, it has been a great class and I would gladly take it again.
