In every corner of the globe, you can find a vibrant community of developers, creators, artists, and hobbyists, united by a passion for advancing the Web3 space. Lisbon is no exception to that.

Our journey through the ETHGlobal Hackathon 2023 season started by attending ETHGlobal Lisbon, where we were thrilled to be partaking in and sponsoring this event. And did it pay off! But more on that later 😉…

Connecting with the vibrant Web3 community in Lisbon

In the run-up to the much-anticipated hackathon, we recognized the importance of forging lasting connections within the expansive Web3 community. To connect with the community, we hosted a series of side events that were anything but on the side.

We were excited to attend and sponsor Epic Web3’s Epic L2 Day, a one-day technical event for builders dedicated to Ethereum L2 Scaling. You did not want to miss Core Contributor Carlo, who took center stage with his workshop on how Cartesi Rollups work and how they enable billion CPU cycle transactions. In case you did miss it, you can find the replay here:

Prepare to soak in even more cutting edge L2 knowledge with Core Contributor Max in a panel discussion centered around Ethereum Scaling together with industry experts from Scroll, StarkExpress, and Linea by ConsenSys. Rewatch it here if you missed it:

Together with Lisbon Crypto Meetup we hosted a meetup at Arroz Estúdios, where we delved into Cartesi tech and the concept of bringing the Linux OS to blockchain development — an innovation that aims to usher in the next wave of Web3 developers and push the boundaries of DApps as we know it. The event consisted of a tech talk demystifying Cartesi’s Application Specific Rollup, followed by a session dedicated to the world of Blockchain Gaming. We ended the event with an ideathon, designed to help teams building at ETHGlobal Lisbon get a head start on thinking about their upcoming build!

And that’s not all. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend a panel discussion centered around bridging Web3 ecosystems! In collaboration with CV Labs, Core Contributor Max took the stage alongside industry experts from Safe and Gnosis to share their collective insights and experience, fostering a dialogue aimed at forging stronger connections within the Web3 landscape.

Concluding the exciting prelude to the hackathon, Core Contributor Omran joined a dynamic Twitter Spaces session hosted by Based in Lisbon, a thriving Web3 community. In case you missed it, worry not! You can catch the replay of it right here:

Powering up the ETHGlobal Community

The Recharge Station is back! After a successful run at ETHGlobal San Francisco last year, we couldn’t resist bringing it back to ensure that all dedicated builders are fully recharged and relaxed during the intense days of the hackathon. With over 650 builders, 29% new to Web3, and coming from 51 countries, we have to give massive kudos to ETHGlobal for bringing together all these bright minds into one venue! But this also meant only one thing — we knew we had to step up our game.

And we did. After experiencing the 10-minute massages, builders were left in a state of pure bliss. Though it may not seem like a lot of time, in the fast-paced environment of a hackathon, 10 minutes is all you need, and have, to recharge and reset!

The recharge station goes beyond mere relaxation- it serves to revitalize. In our relentless effort to keep builders fuelled and energized, we set up a smoothie station, brimming with an assortment of fresh fruits for a convenient and nutritious snack to sustain builders during the last legs of the hackathon!

Emphasizing the significance of community, we set up a special board to celebrate the ETHGlobal community. We invited everyone to share what they were building in Ethereum’s Infinite Garden for an exclusive shoutout on Twitter and an exciting opportunity to win a special Cartesi SWAG item. Stay tuned as we unveil the lucky winners on our social media!

It was incredible to see builders come together and use the space. Be on the lookout for ETHGlobal Paris, as we gear up to set up the station again!

The next-generation of #BUIDLing with Cartesi begins

Let’s kick things off by giving an enormous shoutout to our extraordinary Core Contributors: Claudio, Carlo, Felipe, Max, and Augusto. These incredible people went above and beyond to put Cartesi on the map for all builders coming to ETHGlobal Lisbon! With their impeccable attention to detail and unwavering tech support, they helped builders deliver some incredible projects to the Ethereum ecosystem last weekend. Kudos to you all!

A special kudos to Carlo, who presented his Billions of Reasons to Use Cartesi workshop at ETHGlobal Lisbon, opening a new world to ETHGlobal developers and sharing the limitless possibilities of what Cartesi tech can help them create.

And another special kudos to Claudio, for running around the venue with his tiny microphone and shooting footage for the #BUIDLwithCartesi shorts series. Missed the series? You can rewatch them here:

And finally..

Time to present the winners!

Congratulations to our first place winner: 🥇Cartenixd

A proof of concept allowing you to run Nix builds inside the Cartesi VM leveraging the Nix reproducible build system. Read more on it here.

Congratulations to our first shared pool winner: 🏅COBE

An order book exchange that allows inputs from Ethereum, but makes the computation off-chain trustless via Cartesi Rollups. Read more on it here.

Congratulations to our second shared pool winner: 🏅Chain GPT

Decentralised & verifiable chat AI, backed by the blockchain: a port of Alpaca LLM model -leveraging the Cartesi app-specific rollups. Read more on it here.

A first for Cartesi!

Yes, yes, we’ve shared a lot already, but we can’t be silent about this. For the first time, a project built with Cartesi has been selected as an ETHGlobal finalist! Let’s give a massive applause to Deanne, who has to be one of the coolest women out there! With her day job as a roboticist, she managed to captivate both the ETHGlobal judges and audience with her project Chain GPT, aiming to use AI for good in education. She’s certainly an inspiration for a lot of women out there, and we cannot be more proud of her. Watch her presentation at the closing ceremony here:

Of course, we wanted to check in with her after the hackathon. Here’s what she had to say:

And with that, we bring another phenomenal hackathon with ETHGlobal to a close! A heartfelt thank you goes out to each and every participant who contributed their talent, dedication, and innovative spirit. It was truly inspiring to see not only the remarkable projects built with Cartesi tech, but also the other fascinating projects out there, enriching the vibrant Ethereum ecosystem.

About Cartesi

Cartesi is an application-specific rollup execution layer with a Linux runtime. Cartesi Rollups can be deployed as a layer 2 (on top of Ethereum), as a layer 3 (on top of Optimism, Arbitrum, zkEVM chains, etc.), or as sovereign rollups. It opens up the design space for more expressive and computationally intensive blockchain applications.

  • DApps are deployed on their own customizable application-specific rollup chains;
  • DApps don’t compete with each other in Cartesi’s ecosystem for scarce blockspace;
  • Cartesi provides Ethereum or L2’s with orders of magnitude more computational capacity;
  • Developers can code decentralized logic with their favorite libraries, compilers and other time-tested open source components;
  • DApps preserve the strong security guarantees and censorship resistance of the underlying blockchain;
