Why Catholicism says, ‘This is what we believe,’ — even when 99% stray, sin, rebel, go the other way (whoever humbles himself)

How can Catholics talk about “what we believe” when they disagree? Because the Catholic Church is The Way, one Body with 1.4 billion parts.

Routinely, you can find polls saying, “Catholics vary in their abortion views” or that just half of Catholics believe in the Real Presence (the key difference between Catholics and Protestants). In addition, only 37 percent follow the Church’s requirement to go to confession at least annually.

It’s all about one big Family — with 1.4 billion parts (though all sin)

We accurately say “we believe” because the Church isn’t a democracy or a club or a business responding to markets or changing times: It’s one eternal Family of baptized believers, each committed to one set of beliefs and, most importantly, one relationship with their Lord.

Yes, all individuals within the Church fail to live up to those beliefs, stray, sin, and fail to “get it right.” Many openly disagree with certain teachings (we all too often seem to become “cafeteria Catholics” in some…
