Choices reasoned well — or not
Heart influenced? Cupid’s plot
Options shape our destiny
Intuit instinctively
Can’t commit? Procrasti-Day
Embrace chance? Coin-flip, then pray
Safest — boldest, it’s your play!

Hello and Happy New Year, loyal Chalkboard readers and writers. You’ve figured out the prompt is “choices” , but first and importantly, the musical accompaniment (not a requirement for future prompters) …

In a minute, Janelle Monáe will sing and perform“Tightrope”, which I chose for the following reasons:
The obvious … making important decisions (choices) in life often feels like you’re walking a tightrope.
Two … the music is very upbeat, but the lyrics deal with how important it is to maintain your balance during the ups and downs of life — noting especially for artists, the times of praise and criticism (lack of praise or even acknowledgement).
Three … I love Janelle’s story. She openly describes herself as a queer black woman in America. From biography.com, Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985, in Kansas City, Kansas. Her mother was a janitor and her father was a garbage truck driver who struggled with drug addiction throughout Monáe’s childhood. “I come from a very hard working-class family who made nothing into something,” she says. Monáe’s hardscrabble background and early understanding of the perils of drug addiction inspired her intense drive to succeed.” Indeed, Janelle’s succeeded against the odds by making some good choices!
And finally … it’s the New Year, so what better time to dance to the perfect combination of uplifting lyrics and contagious rhythms. Leap out of the post-holiday doldrums (and that chair you’re sitting in) and be energized by the music to face-down life’s obstacles and seize the day. I turned 70 in December, and I’ll never stop dancing — by choice!

Here she is!

OK, now it’s your Turn
