Search the web for examples of data visualization and the results you will see are overwhelmingly in English. Some of this is clearly a function of the platforms used to perform that search, but in contrast, I often find myself needing to translate content when I am researching topics like history, philosophy, and to a lesser extent analytics.

Along the journey, I have found great tools for translating German, Swedish, Portuguese, and even Latin. It was not until I got involved with the #BaseballViz2016 Challenge that I encountered something I hadn’t come across before… Spanish.

It started with ’s submission featured on the cover. Then the infographic below was submitted along with a question on whether timelines are eligible — they definitely are. Late last night, with this article already in flight, the latest submission arrived (added below).

So is there a language divide in data visualization? Or do submissions like these show that it is simply a matter of the topic at hand? Or is the sport of baseball simply capable of bridging that divide? Maybe it really is The King Sport… at least as far as infographics are concerned.

Baseball Visualization Challenge is a concept created by Corsair’s Institute. Neither this competition nor Corsair’s Institute is not associated with the MLB in any way. Our visualization expertise is second to none. Our softball team loses in games where the other team forfeits.
