This collection of essays come out of a trimester long symposium on Theology & Trauma Studies at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. Each group reads different theologies (e.g., Liberation, Womanist, Reform, Eco Theology, etc.) alongside trauma theorists such as Bessel van der Kolk and Peter Levine. The goal of this symposium is to bring the more embodied methodology of trauma studies to bear on our theology. The primary question: can words be found in the wordless space of trauma? If redemption is to be understood in this difficult location, then we must find words that bear witness not only to suffering but also to how the love of God “remains” (Shelly Rambo) even in the aftermath of trauma.
