“First,” you say, “we need to defend this place. When the orcs arrive, it’ll be carnage. There’s no time to evacuate.”

“But the mines…” begins a villager.

You shake your head. “No chance. They’re coming that way. We need to block the streets — turn this village into a fortress.”

Your friends get to work. Bruno assembles the skilled woodcrafters to make barricades. Dara gathers local archers; by morning, barrels of arrows are on every rooftop.

A warrior called Tox’ar, a lizardman that you recognise from town, approaches. “Let’s scout the mines,” he says. “Some of my friends are out there.”
