In 2050 we may be facing a $400 trillion problem. It won’t be related to space, AI, peak oil, or black swans. There’s nothing futuristic about it at all: it’s the pensions deficit. Akropolis, the newest member of the Symbiotic Network, is tackling this big issue.

The world’s population is getting older, but the financial systems designed to support us in retirement are vastly inefficient. That’s not surprising, since today’s pension systems were designed in the first half of the 20th century, when life expectancies were decades lower. Workers were supposed to reach the retirement age, live to draw from the pension for a few years and pass away. Thankfully, we are all expected to live longer than our grandparents. That’s great news for us, but a troubling prospect for the pensions industry.

The global pension deficit is estimated at $70 trillion. Many pension programs are under-capitalised. This means that they simply don’t have the assets to fund future pensions. According to the World Economic Forum, this gap is expected to reach $400 trillion by 2050 — five times the size of the global economy.

This is the problem being targeted by Akropolis, the latest addition to the Cindicator Symbiotic Network. The team behind Akropolis proposes the creation of an alternative, decentralised pensions infrastructure on the blockchain and a safer financial future for humanity, built by and for the people. Akropolis has assembled a stellar team of professionals who have decades of experience of working with pension funds and financial institutions. They know the system well. They know that it’s ripe for change yet stuck in the old ways, so they’ve set out to create an alternative solution.

The Akropolis platform will deliver a transparent, accountable, and portable pensions infrastructure. Pension funds and fund managers will benefit from reduced overhead costs and access to new token-based mechanisms for working with clients. Individuals will gain greater transparency and auditability from a blockchain-engaged pensions platform with clear behavioural incentives.

Cindicator created the Symbiotic Network precisely to help companies like Akropolis that are contributing to the development of the new economy. One of our aims is to support teams researching and developing new DLT protocol layers to strengthen the digital asset ecosystem. We want to create deep, symbiotic relationships that lead to positive feedback loops.

Both Cindicator and Akropolis are aiming to improve the way capital is managed. Cindicator is developing Hybrid Intelligence to enable effective asset management. Pension funds are a major source of long-term capital to the financial ecosystem. Akropolis, as one of its aims, is tackling the issue of inefficiencies, misaligned incentives and opacity. In that light, both companies have similar goals and visions.

Cindicator’s strong ecosystem could also give rise to a new Akropolis community. Decentralised platforms, such as the one Akropolis has set out to create, require a strong community. That’s where our experience is particularly useful. To share our knowledge Kate Kurbanova, our current Head of Analytics, is joining full time as Head of Community at Akropolis. Kate was instrumental in using Cindicator’s token sale to create a successful ecosystem of 107,000+ analysts and 16,000+ token holders.

Cindicator Co-founder and CEO Mike Brusov said: “We launched the Symbiotic Network to create deep symbiotic relationships within our network and work together on solving the most pressing problems. The pensions industry is an example of a system that cannot be transformed from the top. It’s a highly contentious issue and it’s easier to just kick the can down the road. Akropolis is building an alternative pensions infrastructure, using blockchain to bring control back to the people, while adding key elements of decentralisation to a highly rigid industry. We’re excited that we have a chance to use our experience to help Akropolis develop a thriving token economy.”

Akropolis CEO and Founder Anastasia O. Andrianova noted: “We want to partner with teams that have the toolbox and the appropriate value system, so Cindicator and its Symbiotic Network are an organic fit. Being able to tap into collective intelligence to explore how certain topics could be addressed is a valuable asset. Cindicator’s global community of over 107,000 analysts could become the source of beta testers and early adopters.”

We invite you to join the Akropolis community and help to change the way humanity thinks about saving and investing.
