Education Portfolios

Have you completed an independent study? Or done a cool internship? Portfolios can be a great way to show off your amazing work.

Idea: Showcase your own work through an online portfolio through Medium.

Benefits: 1) Use portfolio to share work on future college applications and job employment options, and 2) Share your work with family and the community.

A portfolio can be a great way to show your work if you have completed a project, independent study, or internship. A platform like Medium allows you to quickly create a write-up and include media like videos, images, PDFs and links to other websites. Building out a portfolio allows you to tell your story the way you want it, and show your individuality through your work and passions.

As learning continues to move online, more and more students will create artifacts to help tell a story about their education for colleges and employment opportunities. A online portfolio can be an effective way to quickly share your previous work as you apply for future opportunities.

Writing

But what should you write about? Here’s just a basic outline to help you structure your post, as well as some questions to help you get writing:

  1. Introduction — Introduce the project in an exciting or attention grabbing way.
  2. Problem — What problem are you trying to solve? Why should people care?
  3. Research/Inspiration — What research did you do to learn more about this topic? Where did you find inspiration?
  4. Brainstorming — How did you come up with your ideas? What ideas did you come up with? Share your “rough-draft thinking”.
  5. Experiments/Prototype/Builds — How did you make your ideas real? Did you build any prototypes?
  6. Results and Feedback — How did you test your ideas and what were the results? What feedback did you get?
  7. Reflection — What did you learn from this project (both academic learnings as well as personal growth)? What are the next steps, if there are any?

Getting started is easy, and you can have an online working portfolio in less than an hour! Check out the resources and examples below.
