Yesterday, Instagram announced one of the biggest changes to the app to date — users are no longer are restricted to posting square images.

As of the new update, Instagrammers can post portrait and landscape images and videos, without the need to crop or adjust them in external photo editing apps. Profiles will still retain the classic grid appearance, with non-square images cropped to a centre square to fit the grid until they are opened.

Instagram recognised the limitations that the old format has had on its users in a blog post, stating that “nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format” and that the squares mean “friends get cut out of group shots…and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end.” But all that is about to change.

The update has begun roll out, with many accounts already taking advantage the new app abilities, including Star Wars, who posted their first landscape video in promotion of their upcoming film, Star Wars, The Force Awakens.
