1. Banking on Bitcoin

Banking on Bitcoin is a nice reminder of how and why it all began. It takes us back in time to the early days of crypto, demonstrating both how far we’ve come and how far there still is to go. You might feel a little riled up about the barriers created by power brokers, and see the echoes of Mt Gox in what we’ve faced with FTX. Hopefully, you’ll also be re-inspired by Satoshi’s vision.

2. The Social Dilemma

If you haven’t seen The Social Dilemma, a documentary about the dangers of social media, I’ll warn that viewing may cause some angst. I may have had a slight existential crisis for a few days after watching. But, have faith, as many of the problems it presents are solvable by the visionaries of web3. It also introduced me to the genius work of Soshana Zuboff, and her book, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism.

3. The Great Hack

The Great Hack presents of the problems of web2 and social media, albeit from a different angle. The ugly, entangled web of government and tech giants is put on full display. If you weren’t sold on the ideals of decentralisation, data ownership and transparency, this might convince you. We’ve just seen round two of this recently with the Twitter Files.

4. Cypherpunks Write Code

Have you heard of the cypherpunks? A small group of cryptography-obsessed nerds with an aim to avoid an Orwellian future for the internet, they went on to influence the entire crypto movement. Cypherpunks Write Code is a short documentary which provides insight into the people who helped create crypto as we know it today. Bitcoin wasn’t created in a vacuum, and the vision of these individuals is what helped inspire it.

5. Hidden Secrets of Money

The Hidden Secrets of Money documentary series will teach you all the things you never learned in school about the monetary system. It answers the questions you never thought to ask about money, fiat currency, its history and the faults of our monetary system as it exists today. Prepare to have your understandings around money significantly disrupted.

Plus a Movie Favourite: The Big Short

Not a documentary, but a movie favourite of mine. In case you forgot who the bad guys are, The Big Short will remind you. Bitcoin was born in the wake of the financial crisis this film presents. The decentralisation movement is all about putting the power in the hands of users, not institutions.

When you take a step back and look at these documentaries you’ll see a core theme: systems of power and the gluttonous humans that seek to maintain their status through them. The decentralisation movement is our beacon of hope that these institutions, as we now know them, may one day fade into obsolescence. I hope these documentaries leave you feeling inspired, maybe a little angry, and reinvigorated in your passion for all things crypto and web3.
