Aptos and Sui: a comparison.

Aptos and Sui are two blockchain networks created by engineers at Diem, a failed cryptocurrency project created by Facebook. Both are designed to enable developers to build decentralized applications and exchanges, leveraging the Proof-of-Stake consensus model and custom programming languages. Aptos has a theoretical throughput of 160,000 TPS, while Sui has unlimited potential. Both networks have wallets and are still in early development.

Deciding between Aptos and Sui can be difficult due to the lack of a definitive answers. Both blockchains are designed to enable developers to create decentralized exchanges, wallets, and DeFi projects. It is necessary to take an in-depth look at each blockchain’s capabilities, throughput, and ecosystem to get a better understanding of which network is better.

Aptos Overview

Aptos is a Layer-1 blockchain developed by Aptos Lab that features a native cryptocurrency (APT) and makes use of the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus model to address slow transaction speed, high gas fees, and security issues of traditional blockchain networks. It utilizes AptosBFT; a Byzantine Fault Tolerance consensus algorithm based on HotStuff.

Aptos utilizes “Move,” which is a new smart contract programming language that can utilize modules to encode the rules of state transactions. It has defined its ledger state as the state of all accounts and utilizes an unsigned 64-bit integer that corresponds to the number of transactions that the network executes. Aptos follows the original design of Diem, where it moves valuable assets between the storage accounts of users.

The blockchain has a theoretical throughput of 160,000 TPS, over 100 projects developed for it, and a peak of 18,000 nodes on its DevNet. The Blocto Wallet allows users to easily onboard Aptos.

Sui Overview

Sui is a Layer-1 blockchain designed to enable creators and developers to easily build decentralized applications (dApps). It utilizes a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus model, however, introduces horizontally scalable throughput and storage. It leverages Narwhal and Bullshark or Tusk, a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based mempool, to ensure data availability and ordering. Sui has over 30 projects and more than 5000 nodes across its ecosystem.

Sui also utilizes Sui Move, which is a programming language based on Rust, and initially designed at Meta. Sui stands out due to the fact that it is able to scale horizontally without any upper bounds, enabling developers to meet application demand whilst maintaining low operating costs associated with transactions. This is essentially an object-centric storage system that records everything on-chain.

Sui also eliminates any bottlenecks found in existing blockchains; unlike traditional blockchains, which push transactions into sequential blocks that create wasteful computation power, Sui organizes the data within an independent object, which means that the transactions can get executed in parallel.

When we look at the blockchain from a throughput standpoint, Sui utilizes shared data which can enable potentially “infinite” throughput; however, this is something that is heavily dependent on the types of transactions executed.

Moving Forward

Aptos and Sui are two projects using the “Move” language that aim to scale the blockchain ecosystem. Aptos leverages BFT and can scale up to 160,000 TPS, while Sui has DAG, BFT and no consensus for simple transactions and potentially unlimited throughput. Both projects have less than 1 second in terms of time to finality, and there are wallets developed for them. Move technology has a lot of potential, but it is still too soon to determine which is the more promising project.
