Decentraland metaverse: Getting married in a virtual world
Decentraland metaverse hosts the first virtual marriage. While their responsible law group claims the marriage ceremony and certificates are valid, some legal experts have doubts. But this hasn’t stopped more couples from following suit.
Metaverse technology is yet to shine bright in the blossoming world of Web 3, but that hasn’t stopped couples from all over the world from tying the knot in the virtual world.
On May 19, hats and fascinators were ditched in through Oculus headsets, as Florian Ughetto and Liz Nunez said “I do” in front of 20 guests at their private plot in virtual reality.
But the first virtual marriage happened even earlier. On February 5, a virtual crowd of over 2000 and a Supreme Court Justice official saw the meta-wedding of Ryan and Candice Hurley. They took a big step by hosting their wedding celebration on the Metaverse. The event is the first metaverse wedding event and was legalized and managed by Rose Law Group.
Speaking at the event, the Law Group’s President Jordan Rose revealed her excitement around her company being the first to make a metaverse wedding event a reality.

Rose is aware that the metaverse technology is still in its early stages; however, she says her company “developed the legal paradigm for a legally recognized marriage.” She further disclosed that the Group developed a “meta-marriage framework,” including a “Virtual Premarital Agreement.” The couple’s digital identities were then identified and recorded on a blockchain.
It’s worthy to note that the couple had initially married themselves in the real world 14 years back after having met online.

The challenges the first metaverse wedding faced
However, Hurley’s plan for an effortless wedding didn’t go as they had imagined as they encountered some technical challenges in the marriage event.
The first barrier was the number of guests at the wedding celebration, which Decentraland struggled to handle. Another challenge was the concept of NFT gifts which were claimed only twenty minutes into the event.
Various other challenges faced were the failure of the bride’s virtual appearance where in some cases it stopped working while in others, she was using a dress or a hoodie.
Metaverse and Law: Is a metaverse wedding valid?
While Rose Law Group has ensured that the wedding and certifications are valid, some legal experts share a whole different opinion. The American Marriage Institute, as an example, requires that couples have to appear in their physical selves and not as avatars or digital replicas. Some states in the U.S. do not recognize a marital relationship performed by an officiant remotely.
Rose boldly insists on the legitimacy of the marriage as she sees the future of metaverse as completely decentralized and entirely on the blockchain. Thus, Rose says, “the future of marriage in the metaverse will not need to have a record of their marriage in the real world.”
However, the actual legitimacy of the marriage remains to be decided, with several states’ laws contrasting a virtual marriage.
While the future of weddings on the metaverse remains unclear, the future of the metaverse itself is promising, indeed.
