Traditional note-taking applications are cloud-based, which are hosted by a bunch of centralized servers and operated and controlled by certain entities, normally big companies. Such cloud-based note-taking applications cannot be trusted, because data can be lost due to hardware problems or other problems even with redundant backups. Anyone that has database access can erase or leak all your notes, which could be a disaster obviously.
Today I’ll introduce a blockchain-based note-taking application, DstarNote, which is built on top of Internet Computer with Canister as a unit.
Is It Safe Enough?
Yes, for sure.
It uses Internet Identity to ensure anonymous login. You can refer to the guide I published earlier to register the Internet Identity. And the second encryption will be done through either a seed phrase or a password after you login with the Internet Identity. Users will have 100% control over the Canister. Later, users can migrate the notebook to another notebook on Internet Computer if they prefer to do so. This is done easily and securely.

Step 2: Login with Internet Identity
Step 3: Enter your device name. Since DstarNote can be used on multi-devices, kindly record each device’s name.
Step 4: Choose a backup method, either password or seed phrase.
Step 5: Get your principal ID, your unique address on IC.
Step 6: Here you’re done!

- User Center.
Here it shows your ID, principle ID and you can choose a password or a seed phrase as a backup method.
- My Wallet
You can see your balance and transaction history. You can deposit or withdraw your ICP also.
- Create a notebook
It costs around 0.5 ICP to create a notebook, you need to transfer ICP first to the wallet.
- Enter your notebook, you can
1) add cycles,
2) transfer the empty notebook Canister to another principle ID,
3) or even change notebook controller to be responsible for maintaining the code, which means that you take control of the Canister 100 percent.
- Edit your note.
The note is auto saved once a change is detected. Freely change the format or font size that you like.
Once you have multiple notes, you can star your note or pin your note.
Tips For you
To ensure your keys are safe, remember not to take screen shots or copy your passwords and do not use unauthorized plugin and IME.
Have another string to your bow.
Still save your password separately in several notes or in reverse order even use the DstarNote.
