Honey, I minted an NFT!
Recap: Jessica explained hash and distributed ledger technology to Zack.
“Darling, did you mint your NFT on OpenSea?” This was the first thing Zack said when walking through the door coming back from work.
“Yes, I did. It is the biggest marketplace. What happened? You look worried.” Amy emerged from the kitchen when she heard Zack.
“I heard that OpenSea got hacked and about 200 million worth of NFTs were stolen. Are you affected?” Said Zack.
“Really?” Amy replied. “I am not sure, but I don’t think so. I got notified this morning that my NFT was sold. But I have not cashed out anything. Well, I do not know how to do that yet. I will have to ask my “sifu”, Jessica.” Amy shrugged.
“Congratulations on making your first NFT sale! I think it would be good for you to cash it out as soon as possible. Let’s ask Jessica how you can do that. What time is it over there? Let me check.” Zack looked at his phone. “It is ten in the morning for her. Should be perfect timing.”
“You are really into this NFTs thing. Jessica is a night owl, remember? She is probably struggling to get out of bed now. Why don’t you go and get a shower while I prepare dinner? I will drop her a message asking her to jump in on a call with us, says, in about two hours from now. Cool?”
“Alright. I was worried sick since I read about it in the afternoon. I tried to call you but you are not answering. Where were you?”
“I was out to spend some time in the cafe around the corner, planning for my next project and I forgot to bring my phone along,” Amy replied apologetically.
“Are you sure you are not doing that on purpose to make me worry?” Zack said jokingly while walking towards the master bedroom. Amy replied with an evil look.
There was an aromatic smell coming from the kitchen. Amy was preparing her cheese-baked chicken for dinner. That’s her signature dish. The most important step is to marinate the chicken chunks overnight. Amy has her secret marinade sauce recipe from her grandmother. She just needs to cover the marinated chicken with a can of cream corn, cover it with shredded cheddar cheese and bake it in the oven over 400°F for 30 minutes. It goes really well with rice. Amy has prepared aromatic pilaf rice to go with the chicken.
“It smells so good! I love it.” Zack came out of the shower and wrapped Amy from her back and gave her a peck on the cheek.
“You smell good too,” replied Amy. “Alright, dinner is ready and Jessica has agreed to join us for a call in about an hour.”
Right after dinner, Zack set up the laptop on the dining table ready for the call with Jessica, while Amy was getting the dishwasher ready to work.
“Hi, Zack, good to see you again,” Jessica greeted, with a cup of coffee in her hand. “It has been quite a while since I last talked to you. Was it a month? Or maybe two?”
“It has been two months. I am supposed to catch up with you and clear all those questions that have been lingering in my mind. But, well, yearend has been keeping us busy. And we flew to join Amy’s family for the Chinese New Year celebration earlier this month.” Zack was chit-chatting with Jessica. Amy joined him and brought along 2 apple crumbles as dessert. In their household, dinner is never complete without dessert being served, even if it is just some chocolate mints.
“Hi, Jess. I sold my NFT this morning.” Amy beamed!
“Congratulation! I am so happy for you.” Jessica replied with a big smile.
“Zack said he reads about a heist that happened on OpenSea. Have you heard of that? What has happened? 200 million is stolen, right? Sounds so scary. Isn’t that suppose to be very safe?” Asked Amy.
“Oh, the OpenSea. I was one of the victims too but then they returned my NFTs last night. What a relief. Else I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you. I’d still be burrowed in my bed sobbing my heart out.” said Jessica.
“Oh, dear! Seriously? How did this happen? And they returned your NFTs too? Who are they? ” Amy responded in disbelief.
“I have no idea. I am still investigating what has happened and at this moment, there is not much information available.” Jessica shrugged. She obviously seems less energetic and deflated. “But I will sure keep you both posted.”
“Anyway, I am glad that you got your NFTs back,” said Amy.
“Me too. Anyway, you want to talk to me urgently for a reason, right?” Jessica asked.
“Oh, right. How can I cash out the coin I received? Do I need to transfer it out from the OpenSea first?” Amy asked.
“You do not need to transfer it out, the crypto goes directly into your wallet. What you need to do now is to open an account with an exchange, transfer your crypto to the exchange, then turn our crypto into fiat money and have it transferred to your bank account.” Jessica explained, “You can check out Coinbase or Crypto.com.”
“What is fiat money?” Amy asked.
“Fiat is money backed by the government, for example, our US dollars,” Zack intervened.
“Oh!” Amy nodded her head. “Jess, the whole process is so complicated, can you walk me through it?” Amy looked distressed. Anything related to IT is like an alien language to her. Jessica has to hand-holder her every step while minting her NFT.
“Sure. Remember you created a wallet when you mint your NFT? Now, access your wallet again. Still remember the password? Or the private key? You still have it, right? It is the key to your assets. Don’t ever lose it,” Jessica said.
“Private key? Oh, damn!” Amy froze, “I don’t remember where I keep it!”
