Who would have thought that a novel written in the late 90s would be the groundwork for technology like the metaverse?
The novel, Snow Crash, written by Neal Stephenson, was about a virtual world that helped people escape reality.
In fact, the term “metaverse” was coined in the sci-fi novel.
After the concept of a metaverse was introduced in the novel, several companies developed online communities that allow users to interact with themselves in a three-dimensional landscape.
Although they were developed, these companies failed to onboard the masses.
The popularity of this concept grew in 2021 when Meta (formerly known as Facebook) informed the public that they would build a metaverse.
What is the Metaverse?
Metaverse is a technology that combines Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, social media, and the internet to help users communicate and interact with themselves in a virtual world.
The functionality of this technology is to enhance users’ experiences.
I know what you are thinking. Is it not the same thing the internet is doing right now? Well. You are right.
There is a difference, though (maybe a lot). The metaverse is not trying to separate itself from the internet; it is being built on it.

What makes up the internet?
The internet consists of billions of computers and devices interacting with one another.
You might think you are chatting with a friend using a social media platform. Actually, it is just your devices communicating with each other.
The concept of the metaverse is much more.
Why is that?
The metaverse uses virtual, mixed, and augmented reality to input the real world into the virtual world to enhance the user’s experience.
In simpler terms, you will visualize, hear sounds, and, if possible, feel in the multiverse.
Driving a car in the metaverse might be possible. Think of the metaverse as a simulator, but much more sophisticated than that.
You browse on the internet but live on the metaverse.
How does the metaverse work?
You should have an idea of how the metaverse works now. You should be able to imagine it.
Let us go deeper.
To use the metaverse, you are going to need an avatar. An avatar will represent you in the virtual world.
Do not tell me you think humans will magically appear in this wonderland. (haha).
Using your avatar, you can do quite a few things. You can socialize, attend classes, party, travel, work, and so forth.
A metaverse is a place where the physical and digital worlds converge.

Experts have estimated that the metaverse will be more refined by 2040.
Several companies have directed some of their resources to build on this concept. Meta announced in 2021 that they allocated $10 billion to build a metaverse.
Although they have faced roadblocks since then, Meta is hellbent on making this technology a reality.
