Introduction
In the dynamic world of AI and machine learning, the advent of Custom GPTs by OpenAI has opened new frontiers for tech enthusiasts and developers. As a pioneer in this realm, my journey in creating my first Custom GPT (Tarot Sage), has been a blend of challenges, discoveries, and achievements. In this article, I’ll share eight crucial lessons I learned through this process.
Not familiar with custom GPTs? Learn more here:
1. Importance of Saving Work
Lesson One: Save Religiously
The reliability of OpenAI’s GPT Builder can be questionable at times. I learned the hard way that even though my instruction prompts and action schemas appeared saved, they weren’t. Additionally, there’s a risk of accidental overwriting. The solution? Work on your prompts and schemas in a reliable external editor and, importantly, implement version control.
For example, you can already have nice instructions, but after asking for a little update you may lose the previous behavior of your GPT.
2. Protecting Actions Endpoints
Lesson Two: Strengthen Endpoint Security
The visibility of endpoint domains in chat interactions can lead to potential security risks. I added authentication layers to my endpoints, using API Key + Bearer settings for enhanced security. This simple step can significantly safeguard your data.
3. Utilizing Serverless Solutions
Lesson Three: Embrace Serverless Technologies
Serverless solutions like Lambda and API Gateway provided a robust and scalable platform for developing my GPT Actions endpoints. These technologies are especially beneficial for projects with unpredictable workloads 👍
4. Tracking GPT Usage (If you use API)
Lesson Four: Monitor Your GPT’s Impact
Understanding the usage and reach of your GPT is vital. As OpenAI doesn’t provide direct usage statistics, I resorted to tracking my endpoint’s activity. This approach gave me a fair estimation of the traction my GPT was gaining.
5. Promoting Your GPT
Lesson Five: Optimize for Discoverability
Before the launch of an official GPT Store, leveraging third-party directories is crucial for visibility. Early submission and basic search optimization can significantly enhance your GPT’s discoverability, paving the way for what might soon be known as GPT Store Optimization (GSO).-
- Share on your social platforms
- Add your GPT to custom GPT stores like LINGO BLOCKS & gptstore.ai
6. Simplifying GPT Sharing
Lesson Six: Make Sharing Effortless
The effectiveness of sharing your GPT can be greatly enhanced with a custom domain name or short URL. Choose a domain that aligns with your project’s scope and target audience.
