Opening and Welcoming

COMPFEST 15, Depok — COMPFEST 15 User Experience Academy (UXA) Camp 1 started on August 26, 2023. The event was held on the Zoom platform and opened by the MCs. Then, it was followed with speeches from COMPFEST 15 Vice Project Officer, Vladi Jingga Mentari, COMPFEST 15 Manager Academy, Mayfa Shadrina Siddi, and COMPFEST 15 Person in Charge of User Experience Academy, Amelia Putri Chaerani.

Opening Material: Introduction to UX

After that, the event continued with Introduction to UX Design, Research & Framework by Lawrence Edward S., Product Designer at Tiket.com. He explained User Experience from a basic that anyone can understand since it was based on the user’s perspective when using the product. He also shared some tips for UX research such as defining research goals and stating scope & limitations.

After the materials sharing session by the speaker, the event continued with a questions and answers session. Every participant enjoyed this session by asking him lots of questions. Since it was a great opportunity for all participants to gain more knowledge from the expert.

Moved from the Q&A session, the hands-on session began. Participants were divided into a few groups and each group had a mentor to help and guide them regarding the hands-on. The hands-on was about Introduction to UX and Planning Research. In addition, mentors in UXA Camp 1 were:

· Hanif Ibadurrahman, Senior Product Designer at Kompas Gramedia,

· Andhita Nurul Ainun, UI/UX Designer Lead at Bank Mega,

· Muhamad Rajiv Ibrahim, Head of Researcher at Telkom Indonesia,

· Raditya Bayu Hartono, Research Coordinator at Telkom Indonesia,

· Dea Chandra Marella, Research Operations Coordinator at Telkom Indonesia, and

· Nanda Bagus Prakosa, Research Coordinator at Telkom Indonesia.

Second Material: Deeper into UX Research

Done with hands-on and rest time, materials continued by Nizariansyah Agung, Product Researcher at Pinhome, about Know Your User & Product More by Doing UX Research. One of the sub-materials he explained regarding the research questions was:

  • knowing the user’s background based on demographics,
  • provide screening questions to validate the characteristics of targeted users,
  • using general questions such as goals, intentions, and motivations,
  • questions that are things users want to understand more deeply about their attitudes,
  • specific questions to validate, and
  • feedback questions to find out what the user feels when interacting with the product.

After the presentation and Q&A session, the event continued with a direct practice session. But this one’s topic is related to the materials that just explained which is Know Your User & Product More by Doing UX Research.

Next Material: Use of Data in UX

On the next day, the topic was deeper into data in UX. Started with Data Synthesis & Knowing User Needs by Asa Fairuz Dinar, Senior Product Designer at Qiik, she explained one of the most important points which is empathy maps. It is important to create empathy maps since it will create a shared understanding user of needs and help with decision-making. The knowledge was implemented in the hands-on sessions. It was divided into three steps: affinity map, user persona, and empathy map.

Closing Material: Problems and Solutions

Even though it took some time to finish the exercises, participants’ enthusiasm for getting more knowledge grew stronger on the next material. Last but not least, the material was about Designing User-Centered Solutions: Crafting Effective Problem Statements and Formulating UX Solutions which was delivered by Fauzy Iman, UI/UX Designer at DANA. One of the subtopics was about solution space that splits into goals, insight, hypothesis, solution, and output. Related to the topics, the hands-on session also needed a few steps to be done. As you have guessed, the next thing that participants needed to do was implement the materials in the hands-on session.

Interview Session

By the end of day 2 of Camp 1 UX Academy COMPFEST 15, I got a chance to interview one of the participants, Rifqi. With a background as a graphic designer, he started to be keen on UI/UX in May 2023. He decided to include UI/UX as his passion. So, he begun to learn UI/UX autodidact. When he realized that self-taught was hard, he got a chance to join UX Academy COMPFEST 15. He said this event helped him a lot to get much knowledge from the experts and implement it with guidance from a mentor. Furthermore, he intends to improve his skills in UX and take internships to implement his knowledge.
