20 Blockchain Projects With the Most Dev Activity on Github — May, 2019

Fun Fact: 17 of them are BUIDLing with Ethereum.

You can tell a whole lot about the state of a project or application by the amount of activity it has on Github. Projects with lots of action are more likely to be in the midst of BUIDLing and shipping, while a Github that’s populated only by lonesome tumbleweeds is a sign of a project that’s either not moving forward or is so perfect that it doesn’t require any more work — and that is something of a rarity.

State of the Dapps does a great job of harvesting data from Github, including commits, pushes, issues, and pull requests from open source projects representing the most notable platforms that support decentralized apps — including Ethereum, EOS, Steem, and xDai. The result is a bird’s eye view of developer activity in the blockchain space.

Although this information is by no means a definitive picture of the blockchain ecosystem for countless reasons, the Github data illustrates some interesting trends regarding developer activity in the blockchain space in regards to open source projects.

The month of May showed significant changes in rankings for activity on Github, with projects like ARK, Santiment, AION Network, Raiden, and Kyber Network all slipping out of the Top 20 after a good showing in the previous month of April. In total, May housed less Github commits than April — particularly for projects higher up in the order — suggesting perhaps that many projects were busy trekking to Blockchain Week to do the business that development makes possible. Now it’s time to get back to work!

However, Ethereum still dominates the charts from top to bottom. Of the top 20 projects for developer activity, 17 are built on Ethereum, 1 is built on Tendermint, 1 is built on EOS, 1 is Aelf itself, and 1 integrates POA alongside Ethereum. This suggests what many already know: that the vast majority of blockchain developer activity is on the Ethereum network.

Below are the top 20 projects on State of the Dapps by developer activity over the past 30 days as of June 4th, 2019…

1. Status

Mobile Ethereum OS Status has long been a leader in the blockchain space, and recent activity on Github — with 7133 events in the past 30 days — indicates that the sizable Status team continues to outperform challengers while developing the iOS, Android, and desktop version of the Status app.

2. Cosmos

After launching a Mainnet iteration, the Tendermint-based blockchain interoperability platform Cosmos has rocketed up to the second position on Github this month with a whopping 4245 events. Cosmos’ iteration of its Cosmos Hub is well underway with the launch of Lunie, its native crypto wallet application.

3. Storj

Decentralized cloud storage network Storj is working fast after the launch of its V3 Alpha — named Vanguard. The team has also introduced a separate version of its offerings for Customers and Partners called Tardigrade that sits alongside the original Storj product that already includes storage, governance, and open source collaboration. The Storj team has been holding steady with approximately 4084 events this month.

4. Aragon

Ethereum mainstay Aragon has long since stood out for being a well-run operation, and its platform for creating decentralized organizations presents a powerful proposition. Now live on Mainnet, the Aragon team committed 3292 events to Github over the past 30 days, just down slightly from the month prior, suggesting strong and continued developmental growth.

5. Augur

If you didn’t laid down a crypto wager on Liverpool winning the Champions League Final, do you even blockchain? Augur’s platform of a decentralized oracle and prediction market protocol is one of the most remarkable projects live on the Ethereum Mainnet right now, and with a big 3289 events on the Augur Github last month, all signs point to continued development. 6. High Fidelity

High Fidelity, the virtual reality platform launched by the founders of seminal virtual world Second Life already hosts virtual events, and is now working feverishly towards EOS integration. The High Fidelity Github housed 2888 events last month, which is down 25% from its big jump earlier in the year.

7. 0x

A big month for Ethereum perennials 0x as the team more than doubled its number of Github commits — up 208% with 2675 commits. With over 30 projects utilizing the 0x infrastructure for creating all kinds of decentralized marketplaces to the tune of 712k total transactions, it may be time for one of the most talented teams in blockchain to make some big moves.

8. Origin Protocol

Origin Protocol utilizes Ethereum and IPFS to create decentralized marketplaces. The Origin Beta and newfangled mobile app are already live on the Ethereum Mainnet, and you can use it to purchase all sorts of rare, exciting, and sometimes bizarre items like a violin from the 1800s, Ethereum hologram art, and luxury vacation rentals all over the world. With 2621 events in the Origin Protocol Github last month, there’s definitely more coming from the Origin team.

9. Gnosis

The Ethereum-based prediction platform Gnosis has done so much for the blockchain community already in launching its DutchX smart contracts, the Gnosis Safe, and the Gnosis Olympia Alpha — thus creating the tools with which others can launch their own marketplaces. With 2602 events on the Gnosis Github over the past month, the team is chugging along and bringing more value than ever to the ecosystem.

10. Aelf

A decentralized cloud computing network, Aelf is a relative newcomer on this list with a solid 2396 commits in May. The Singapore-based team just released its v.0.7 Enterprise Alpha on Amazon Web Services, and its diligently prepared weekly progress reports suggest further product rollouts are in short order.

11. Neufund

Berlin-based Neufund is a platform for issuing security tokens on the Ethereum blockchain through ‘Equity Token Offerings.’ With 2190 events on its Github last month — up significantly from the month before — it’s clear that building a security token platform from scratch takes some work!

12. MakerDAO

MakerDAO’s three-pronged approach to decentralized finance includes the Dai stablecoin, collateralized loans via the Maker CDP mechanism, and community governance. Not just one of the most used platforms in Ethereum, in May, MakerDAO’s team was busy at work under the hood, adding 2097 commits to Github over the course of the month, up a big 48% from the month prior.

13. OmiseGO

Thailand-based OmiseGO has been focusing on scaling and interoperability on the Ethereum Network since its launch. With MVPs and testnets of scaling solution Plasma already produced, OmiseGO’s far reaching and substantial developer work resulted in 2093 events on Github last month, up 26% from the prior month.

14. Trust Wallet

A secure multi-coin wallet for Android and OS devices utilized by many leading organizations around the crypto-sphere, Trust Wallet is also the partner wallet for cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Not even in the top 20 in February, Trust Wallet rocketed up the dev activity charts in March, and has shown few signs of slowing down since then with 1962 commits in May.

15. Streamr

A an open-source platform for data marketplaces, with a flagship market of its own, Streamr is taking on a huge pain point. Its platform, already in Core Beta, offers data on everything from trams in Helsinki, air quality in Nantes, to personal Google Fit data for sale. And with a 42% jump to 1788 commits on Github last month, expect more from this remarkable team.

16. Blockscout

POA Network’s BlockScout is an open-source block explorer tool for the Ethereum ecosystem that lets users search and explore transactions, addresses, and balances on the Ethereum and POA Networks. A new edition to the list, the Blockscout team notched up 1750 events on Github in the month of May.

17. Metamask

Everyone’s favorite blockchain browser extension is a cornerstone of the Ethereum ecosystem, and fittingly is always near the top of this list. Now boasting millions of downloads, Metamask’s lithe team is always hard at work improving the Metamask product, and registered 1714 events on Github last month.

18. Colony

A newcomer to the Top 20, Colony provides a platform for the future of work, allowing teams to collaborate with tokenized incentives. At the end of May, Colony released Glider, the first iteration on the path towards its complete vision. In doing so, the Colony team notched up 1439 commits last month, up 75% from April.

19. Golem

Golem’s worldwide supercomputer has been an ever-present in the Ethereum ecosystem, and a leader in both tech and design. With its Beta currently live for download, users can contribute or gain computing power for heavy duty rendering projects. With 1372 commits over the past month, the Golem Network continues its remarkable project with strong upward trajectory.

20. Truffle

Ethereum’s “Sweet Tools for Smart Contracts” and the most utilized suite of developer tools in the whole ecosystem, Truffle is an essential aspect of the growing blockchain industry. Fittingly, activity on the Truffle Github stayed steady in May with an elite 1337 commits, up 2% from the month prior.
