SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of the core aspects in my opinion of online marketing. Without SEO, getting your content found is organically pretty much zero.

Let’s see how I learned in this short guide on SEO for beginners, and how you can!

Disclaimer: If you are looking for a full on SEO tutorial this is not the article to read.

What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a way to make your website visible in google and other search engines with adjustments you can make in the back or the front of the website. By applying a good SEO strategy, you can make your website visible at the top of the Google search page.

Adjustments you could do apply for better SEO

To create better SEO opportunities for your website, you could work on things like the title description, meta description use of specific words like keywords and a lot more.

To learn more about what the complete SEO package is, I would suggest you go to websites like Semrush or Ahrefs, they have full resources about SEO, but we will come back to that later on.

Why would you need to learn SEO?

To say that it’s a must to learn SEO is pretty harsh, but if you would like to start your own business or want to work in marketing, it is a big must learn.

For your own business, the possibility to get found on Google and generate leads is important. And after all, for a startup, SEO is a free possibility to generate good exposure for your business.

As for marketing, SEO is fundamental due to making you more visible and generating leads, which is mostly a marketeers job.

With both of these people is that SEO is free and there are many free resources you can read and learn from, which makes it easy to get started on.

Resources I used to learn SEO

SEO tools and Ahrefs deliver a whole library of learning material to get started with SEO for free. The only side note is that it’s being done with their software, which could be expensive.

Ahrefs also uses free tools, so you could follow along with their tutorials, but these are not in depth like the premium tool, and they are mostly talked about in the tutorials but not used.

So, what did I do to learn SEO?

So, I used both these websites and their YouTube platforms to learn SEO. Ahrefs YouTube is outstanding and a very in-depth learning experience to start off.

After watching the YouTube series, I tried my free trial of Semrush and also used the Ahrefs free Keyword tool to look and feel around. I wasn’t feeling quite confident after watching the YouTube series and went to Udemy and bought the course from Joshua George called The Ultimate SEO Training 2023 + SEO For WordPress Websites, this levelled up my SEO big time.

With SEO changing over time or having different tasks, you might find yourself lost. One source I use a lot when needing quick little tips is the YouTuber Neil Patel, his way of explaining in short context video’s is very helpful where the other platforms have long 20 plus minute videos on the solution you are looking for.

How to practice what you have learned?

You can’t practice like you do with Photoshop or any other software. However, there is one way of practising is by releasing content on Medium. The SEO functions on Medium are pretty relatable to real SEO and can therefore be used for practice.

A second way of practising is by creating your own website. It’s easier said than done, but creating your own website can also be a great portfolio project, and combining it with SEO will combine perfectly if you are applying for a marketer job.

Will Ai Replace SEO marketeers?

Why would you learn something that can be replaced by Ai? I think that Ai can be helpful with creating structure and ideas for your marketing content, however, writing and analysing your SEO will still need the human eye.

Conclusion

In conclusion, learning SEO isn’t easier said than done and could branch out into different aspects like back linking, front end optimisation, and others. But once mastering it could mean big business for your company or job security in marketing.
