The What?

CRM Analytics allows tooltips on almost everything — from charts to number widgets and text widgets! And that’s awesome for your users to see details about the data point which otherwise would be impossible for them to see without creating more charts or tables!

Tooltips

On the other hand, we can create components and add them to one or more dashboards — which is another beauty of CRM Analytics!

Components

The Why?

What if we could add Components to Tooltips?! A few use cases that come to mind:

  1. Better Text tooltips with colors and font variations — In regular tooltips, we cannot edit these.
  2. 2 or more number/text widgets for the same data point — Cannot be done in regular tooltips
  3. 2 or more charts for the same data point or a combo of a chart and another number or text widget — Visualization on tooltips allows only one chart!

The How? — The Magic!

Let’s start with the very first case above. We want better Text Tooltips than possible in the regular tooltips.

To do that, we edit the dashboard we are working on. Click on the widget we want to edit the tooltips for. And scroll down to Tooltips on the Widget Section on the right.

Tooltips Section for the Widget

Then check the box against Add Visualization. And select the type of visualization to be a Component.

Select Component

This will open up existing Components as well as allow us to create new ones.

Select from Existing Components or Create a New One

We will create a new component and start by designing the component. Let’s set the number of columns in the component to 6 and Cell Spacing to 4 X 4. We then name the Component and save it to the desired App. For the Component to work in the dashboard, it will be used in, the App should be shared with the same users who have access to the dashboard. So, ideally, the Component is saved in the same App.

For the text widget to work, we first need some data! Let’s start by creating a simple compareTable.

Trip Details in compareTable

Next, we pull in a text widget from the left pane and add the above details using Add Query Data Function on the Text Widget.

Add Query Data on Text Widgets

With almost no formatting (conditional formatting added to the Trip Total), this is how the Text Widget looks.

Text Widget without formatting

Let’s add some colors and formatting to this.

Added Formatting

Now, we go back to the dashboard. Select the widget -> Tooltip -> Add Visualization Checked and Select the new component -> Done

Select New Component

We can now adjust the visualization settings to our liking. We may also have to adjust the component widget itself.

This is how our Text Widget Tooltip now looks!

Let’s now try the second case where we want 2 or more number/text widgets for the same data point. We will keep our text widget, but also add a few number widgets.

Combo of Text and Number Widgets

We then do the same thing again and add the just-created visualization to the tooltip. But instead of keeping the visualization Size to 300 x 300, let’s update it to 400 x 400.

Same Text Widget Data but with Number and Text in the Tooltip

Now, let’s do the last case of adding two or more charts for the same data point or a combo of a chart and another number or text widget!

We again create a new component and instead of text and number widgets, let’s create a couple of charts. The charts show the Top 10 Pick Up and Drop off Community Areas and color by the Rate.

Couple of Charts in the Component

Again, let’s go back to the tooltip of the dashboard widget and update the tooltip visualization to the newest component.

Multiple Charts as Tooltip

What Next?

What we learned above is just a few examples of the power of using components as tooltips. This power is for all of us to unleash and help our users with better dashboards and better decision-making power!
