1. What is the ICON Network and what makes it stand out from other blockchain projects out there?

The ICON Network is a decentralized public blockchain project that first launched in South Korea back in late 2017. The token that fuels the ICON ecosystem is called ICX.
Like some of its peers, ICON uses a consensus algorithm that is based on Delegated-Proof-of-Stake (DPoS), however with a strong emphasis on governance and active token holder participation.
For example, to earn Staking Rewards, it’s not enough to just stake ICX tokens, but ICX token holders also have to vote for Public Representatives (P-Reps) to earn rewards. You can think of P-Reps as node operators who also work to grow the ICON Network, whether through: building DApps/tools, marketing, community building, education, etc. Currently, the annual yield is about 13.5%, which is relatively high, and one could argue makes ICX an attractive token to HODL.

I’ll also add that from the start, ICON wanted to distinguish itself from its peers by focusing heavily on things like enterprise adoption and interoperability.
Through its major tech partner ICONLOOP (which is a for-profit company who specializes in building custom high performance blockchain solutions for its private clients), ICON has been able to benefit and leverage off the former’s technology and close relationships with local businesses and government.
For example, let’s start with the tech powering ICON — The engine is called Loopchain, which is proprietary technology developed by ICONLOOP.
Back in April, ICON announced the release of Loop Fault Tolerance (2.0) consensus algorithm, which is in many ways similar to Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT), but with improved performance.

Here’s a really tech quick summary of how LFT 2.0 improves things, for non-techies:

Here’s a quote from ICON founder Min Kim that we want to share with you all, upon release of LFT 2.0:
“We’re proud of our accomplishments with LFT 2.0. This alone clearly shows why ICON is the top Korean project. But, we still have a lot of work ahead of us … LFT 2.0 is hard evidence that ICON and Korea now have the technical prowess to innovate head-to-head with global blockchain projects like Ethereum.”
LFT 2.0 was ~3 years in the making, and even passed a rigorous audit by KAIST, a leading South Korean research institution.

Okay, I would also like to add, as mentioned earlier, ICON has a strong focus on interoperability, which was for the longest time a main focus of many blockchain projects (before DeFi became all the rage). There’s so many different blockchain projects out there, so wouldn’t it be nice if they could talk to and communicate with each other? 😊
We’re happy to share that ICON has made tremendous progress in regards to interoperability, and in fact earlier this year, in May, released Blockchain Transmission Protocol (BTP) 1.0….

BTP 1.0 is just another example of innovative ICON tech being pioneered, and it’s still relatively brand new, so we’re really looking forward to seeing what real-world use cases will emerge that can take full advantage of the new possibilities it has opened up.
Aside from the tech, the ICON Network fully decentralized on October 29, and there are now 131 nodes scattered across the globe supporting the project. Our team, Icon Pilipinas, happens to be just 1 of 131. So, outside of the ICON Foundation, which you can think is the leader driving the project, there’s 130 additional P-Rep teams that are able to earn rewards for driving ICON growth.

Just speaking for ourselves, Icon Pilipinas is primarily focused on: education, marketing, and community building. 😊
The best thing about ICON is that anyone is free to contribute, whether it be from volunteer work, setting up and registering a node to run as a P-Rep, or even reaching out directly to ICON Foundation and applying for a grant.
There are really no barriers to entry into the ICON ecosystem, which is what it’s all about, because at the end of the day, the mission statement of ICON is to hyperconnect the world.

2. How is the ICON Network being adopted? What are some examples of real-world use cases?

Alright, now let’s get to the fun part! 🥳
As we mentioned just briefly in the beginning, enterprise adoption is a major focus for ICON, and the network currently has 3 core services: MyID, VisitMe, and #broof
To get started, we’ll touch on MyID, which is the most prominent one, and you may have seen it picked up in the news most recently.
MyID is a collaborative effort to establish blockchain-based digital IDs, and this is an initiative that is being led by ICONLOOP. There is something called the MyID Alliance, which continues to grow at a rapid rate, and there are now 73 total partners, many of which are leading institutions and companies based in South Korea.

A company that you might have heard of is Binance, with BinanceKR joining the MyID Alliance earlier this year, with plans to improve their KYC process.
“We are planning to build a Binance Global AML System that leads the Anti Money Laundering(aml) method for the global blockchain industry, and a KYC system that is of the level of Korea’s №1 ranked financial sector. By joining MyID Alliance we plan to simplify the identification process and strengthen security, such as preventing forgery and identity theft on the exchange.”

In addition, some really exciting news is starting to come out, pertaining to MyID, even if it’s initially in the form of a “soft” launch, to get the ball rolling.

For instance, ICON just announced a major partnership with Jeju Island, which states that all visitors to the island (which is a very popular tourist destination, for both locals and foreigners, averaging 15 million annual visitors) will now be require to download a mobile app called Zzeung, for the implementation of COVID-19 contact tracing.
Wait, there’s more 😉😉
Using Zzeung, a verifiable credential will be issued, which will be done on the ICON public blockchain network. After that, users will also need to setup a pin code or fingerprint authentication, with a separate credential being issued on a private blockchain network. In any event, this is a monumental moment, as it shows not only real-world adoption of blockchain, but also support from local governments.
This very significant news has been picked up by numerous news outlets and publications.

A CSR campaign was launched by ICONLOOP back in June to utilize VisitMe for electronic guestbook services, to help fight the spread of COVID-19

The Financial Services Commission (FSC), South Korean government’s top financial regulator, has announced the inclusion of ICONLOOP’s ‘my-ID’ service into the ‘Innovative Financial Services and Regulations Sandbox’ created under the Financial Innovation Support Special Law.

Jonghyup Kim, CEO of ICONLOOP, stated, “The designation of my-ID as an Innovative Financial Service will be a monumental turning point in the growth of Korea’s blockchain industry.” He also said, “Although it has been somewhat difficult to find a meaningful use of blockchain technology in everyday life so far, this will be an opportunity to prove and verify the usefulness of blockchain technology. I hope that this marks not only the expansion of blockchain technology but also the creation of an overall digital identity ecosphere.”
yes was this monumental achievement… and now about 1 year later, we’re starting to see the fruits of all the labor to get this implemented into everyday life :)

As mentioned earlier, the MyID Alliance now has 73 partners, and this number seems to be growing by the day. With the most recent announcement regarding the partnerships with Jeju Island and Shinhan Bank, we would think that recent momentum will continue on as more and more partners start to slowly unveil their own services/product offerings utilizing MyID, which may or may not find even more creative ways to make use of the ICON public blockchain network.
Outside of the aforementioned core services, there’s also lots of development being done by P-Rep teams, such as the following…..

Balanced will operate as a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) and let users deposit their ICX tokens as collateral so that they can do things like borrow against it (i.e., leverage), do lending, earn interest, make stable payments, etc.

Do you have plans to make your own application or Dapps? If so, what would that dapp focus on and in terms of time, when would you like to launch it to the public?

For our team, personally, we would also love to be able to work on a DApp that has an immense appeal to our local audience, which is the user base in the Philippines. However, since our team is not technical, likely, if our community helps us come up with a great idea, we would look into collaborating with developers (probably another P-Rep team) to get the project off the ground.
In terms of focus, it’s tough to say at this time, but ideally it’s something that could easily catch on and be popular with the average person who knows little or nothing about blockchain technology. It would have to be a DApp for the people… ☺️

NEOPLY recently joined the ICON network, can you tell give us more details about this partnership, and how it would benefit both ecosystems ?
NEOPLY joining was a significant news event for ICON, as it shows that larger companies are becoming more and more interested in getting involved. NEOPLY has a reputation as being a startup accelerator, who has invested in a number of high quality crypto projects. Bringing them onboard also brings their resources, relationships, and knowledge base to the table that hopefully ICON will be able to leverage and benefit from.
Right off the bet, they staked about 9.5 million tokens which removed liquidity and locked up a lot of ICX tokens, which is always a good thing for supply/demand dynamics.

With MY ID alone that has 73 partners so far and seems to be growing everyday, we won’t be surprised if more long term investors will invest with ICON. MyID is a collaboration between many leading companies and institutions. We’ve already seen announcements being made for MyID, such as the Jeju Partnership and Shinhan Bank partnership, that will make use of the ICON public blockchain network right from the start. How is ICON different when using delegated Proof of Stake (dPoS) blockchain protocol from Tezos and Cosmos? What makes ICON different? Also, does ICON consider Tezos and Cosmos as its direct competition? Thank you!

In many ways, ICON is similar to other DPoS platforms, like the ones you mentioned in Tezos and Cosmos, where token holders can stake tokens and earn rewards. As pointed out earlier, though, ICON has a very keen focus on enterprise adoption in South Korea, to begin with… Further, interoperability is kind of the goal of many platforms, including ICON, so I would think that collaboration would be more the goal and aim than direct competition. Blockchain tech still hasn’t gotten anywhere close to being mainstream, and if all these different projects can prove that there are synergies that can be had between them, ultimately, I think that helps everyone out more than anything…. Where things stand now, these projects exist in isolation and that isn’t likely to be a good solution long-term.

Will you focus on connecting public blockchains only or will you support the integration of private blockchains as well? If so, with whom are you looking to cooperate?

This is already done, ICONLOOP, the major tech partner of ICON Network is working with Private blockchain (as you can see with MY ID). With the recent integration of BTP 1.0, public to private blockchain will be able to talk or transact with each other.

As mentioned, ICON has a total of 130 P-Rep teams scattered worldwide, promoting and working for ICON on their own language. And further, we have a community translating the important ICON news headlines using their mother tongue.. Here it is..

Currently attracting real users and mass adoption is a problem for Blockchain projects. how will ICX solve this problem?
Jay — Icon Pilipinas (P-Rep):
Keep building more and more DApps, tools, and use cases… Integrate things like Magic SDK so you can hide as much about blockchain as possible from the end user, who for the average person, really doesn’t care at the end of the day… They just want something that works well and is easy to use.
ICON adoption is going to have to come in stages, with multiple approaches, and this is something ICON is already doing. For example, enterprise adoption and government support for things like MyID, VisitMe, #broof give the project credibility… Then, you have other developer teams, for example, building more “fun” stuff like say Marvelous gift cards, or FutureICX gameified tradiing platform, etc.
Community is everything! :) If you have great ideas, you can always apply for a grant directly from ICON Foundation:

Further, anyone can setup a node and register as a P-Rep, if you want to become a block validator and earn rewards… There’s really no barriers to entry, which is what makes ICON a truly global project.

Aside from myiconwallet does the icon plan to have ICX staking in another wallet like trust wallet? Just like trx they have staking in the wallet and also in the exchanger like binance.

Yes, there’s a new wallet called Wallet X that just got funded to be built by P-Rep team ICONTROL.

ICON works very closely with local government and get there buy in before launching their products… This is why at times progress being made might look “slow” for the average impatient trader, but it’s necessary to make sure things are done right… for long-term growth and stability.

ICON is a global project and although ICON Foundation is focused on securing use cases in South Korea, there are actually many ICON developer teams from Europe, such as Sharpn and block42 :)

What’s the difference between loopchain and blockchain?
What are the main problems you face building an interchain technology for all different blockchains to connect and talk to each other?

Loopchain is the name of the proprietary tech that powers ICON. Blockchain is blockchain :) Interoperability could be a challenge, for example, if consensus algorithm doesn’t match, like Bitcoin using Proof of Work, and other chains using Delegated Proof of Stake… Not saying it’s impossible, but getting everything to work smoothly/reliably is easier said than done…
