VIDEOS: Dairy’s Top 10 States for Jobs
See the dramatic economic ripple effect
The dairy industry is a “jobs machine” that generates employment, tax revenue and other economic impacts for every U.S. citizen in every state.
When you factor in the dairy’s industry’s “ripple effect” to 11 connected economic sectors such as manufacturing and retail the numbers are eye-popping. For example, the U.S. dairy industry:
- Supports 3 million jobs.
- Generates more than $39 billion in direct wages.
- Has an overall economic impact of more than $619.6 billion.
That data comes from Dairy Delivers® — the International Dairy Foods Association’s economic impact tool, with additional economic information available at GotDairyJobs.org, a portal managed for the U.S. dairy industry by the U.S. Dairy Export Council, the National Milk Producers Federation and IDFA.
The three dairy groups have joined forces to educate the public with one voice and a clear message: “Dairy creates jobs, exports create more.”
The national numbers are impressive. The state-by-state data quantifies in granular detail how much taxpayers, lawmakers, construction workers, real estate agents, miners and other full-time workers depend on dairy, whether or not they like milk, butter, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products.
In California alone, the dairy industry supports more than 416,000 jobs and pumps $97.5 billion into the Golden State’s economy.

Just one industry among many in agriculture
Dairy is only one part of the economy’s vast food and agricultural sector.
An economic impact study by John Dunham and Associates found that roughly one-fifth of the nation’s economy is linked, either directly or indirectly, to the food and agriculture sectors, accounting for more than 22 million jobs and nearly 15 percent of all U.S. employment.
