our questions!

We are “diabeates” and our challenge as a team is… how we can make life easier for diabetics! In order to achieve that, we needed to know how their health disorder affected their everyday life, so we interviewed four participants, George, Maria, Melina and Patroklos, ranging in age from 19 to 27.

We asked them what difficulties they face on an everyday basis. We wanted to know how they are dealing with restrictions diabetes includes and whether monitoring their numbers is a challenge. Moreover, if they consider themselves well informed about their eating habits, if their disorder has changed their self-image and last but not least if cooking and flavor has changed.

So, they told us how hard it is for them to organize their time and schedule right and find the balance they need! Insulin injecting themselves and counting meals, finding sources of energy that won’t be carbs! All four of them underlined that after a while it becomes a routine, but they necessarily need to follow a program.

here is an example of the answers we got.

When we asked them about their nutrition, their answer focused on the lack of information they had on considering their eating habits and admitted that they did have to change the way they cooked, adding more vegetables and using less to none salt and sugar. “Nothing is forbidden when it comes to food” was a key phrase used during the interview, followed by a tip, to be careful when shopping, because nowadays salt and sugar is hidden in almost every product.

Finally, when we asked them about their self-image some answered that diabetes did change the way they saw themselves, while others said that no difference was either felt or seen. Nonetheless, control is the virtue that diabetes taught all four of them.
