After you have followed the instructions in the Prepare and Reflect Tool in Blackboard to create a Medium account and associate it with your University username we will invite you to be a writer for Digital Society. This lets you submit your assessment posts which will become part of the unit materials. You are also free to submit anything relevant to the topic themes during or after the course.

If you are new to Medium, we suggest you write your first post and these step by step instructions will help you get started.

Write something about yourself and your interest in Digital Society, then click “Publish”. It doesn’t have to be long, Medium was created by one of the founders of Twitter (X).

When you “Publish” your post you can you can “add topics” and then “Publish and send now”.

Topics

Your first, second and third pieces of coursework should include the topics digisoc1, digisoc2 and digisoc3 respectively.

Using topics allows others to find your work by linking it to topics. We recommend using the tag ‘digisoc’ for anything related to this module.

Licensing (optional step)

This is a big topic in digital society so its important to consider how you license your contributions to this unit.

  1. When you have published your post click the three little dots at the top of the page and scroll down to “Story settings”.
  2. Scroll down to “Content Licensing”.
  3. Access “Edit Licensing”.
  4. Choose your licensing option e.g. “All rights reserved”, “Some rights reserved” or “No rights reserved”.
  5. Click “Save”.

How would you like to make your work available? If you are unsure, you can go with “All rights reserved”, and consider other options later.

For an in-depth discussion of licensing, see our separate post on the topic:

Post visibility

Your work for digisoc1, digisoc 2 and digisoc3 must be public until the end of the course.

By default, your posts will be public when you publish them. We recommend you write publicly so you can contribute to conversations around the topics of this module.

Submitting to Digital Society

As a University of Manchester student, you will have the option to submit posts to the Digital Society publication. You can do this any time during or after the course, for any posts relevant to the subject of digital society.

You are required to submit your assessed work to the publication, as well as submitting a Word version to Turnitin via Blackboard.

See Guide: Submit your work for full details on how to do both.

Non University of Manchester students

The Digital Society course is open and accessible to anyone so you don’t have to be a student at the University of Manchester. All the course content can be viewed online including the assessment. If you choose to write the assessments that is perfectly ok although we would not be able to provide you with a mark or feedback on your work.

Please email digisoc@manchester.ac.uk with any questions or problems.
