Idea: When opening Snapchat, only show the camera button on bottom and don’t show any other buttons until those buttons can actually be tapped including Chat/Stories/flip camera/account/etc 5.1.2016 (#137)

Purpose is to focus on the core action of the camera and not show buttons that cannot yet be tapped.

Tap to open app, then see while loading background is gray and only the camera button loads at a lower opacity then when camera fully loads the other buttons appear because ready to be tapped. Designed by D.J. Sherrets.

Press release:

  • Title: A new opening
  • Introduction: Open Snapchat to a gray screen with a 50% opacity camera button, then the camera button and more buttons loads as soon as the camera fully opens.

Snapchat today:

  • Opening the camera takes a second or two seconds to open, but shows the camera/Chat/Stories/flip camera/night mode/account/etc buttons while those buttons are not yet tappable.
  • So people may tap those buttons and nothing happens which may be confusing.

Proposed idea:

  1. Tap to open Snapchat. Note that only the camera button in reduced opacity appears. Then opacity to full amount and all buttons load when available to tap.

Comments:

  • Opportunity is for clarity in how to access the camera.
  • A reason to do this is to simplify what appears on the loading screen.
  • A reason to not do this is that a benefit of showing the buttons on open is to let the person looking at the loading screen know that those buttons will be available to view.
  • So an alternative version is to show a reduced opacity for all buttons so still available to see buttons when camera is loading but may be clearer that those buttons are not yet available to tap. Then full opacity for buttons appears when the buttons are available to be tapped. That is shown in idea #12: https://medium.com/dj-sherrets/idea-updated-snapchat-app-loading-screen-for-clarity-when-camera-loads-by-using-low-opacity-d25f4e17113d#.tgsmgaa6a
