Yes that’s right, we’re already helping clean oceans with Big Blue Ocean Cleanup and now every search also helps reforest our oceans in the fight against climate change. By joining forces with Operation Posidonia, Ekoru.org is helping make our oceans greener by replanting seagrass meadows.
The unsung heroes in our fight against climate change, seagrass meadows are something you’ve probably never heard of. These native ocean plants are crucial in combating climate change and keeping our oceans healthy.
Operation Posidonia led by University of New South Wales Australia is developing cutting edge techniques to replant seagrass meadows in our oceans.
Seagrass can capture carbon 40 times faster than tropical rainforests, and research indicates that one hectare of seagrass can store as much carbon as ten hectares of dry-land forest. Blue carbon sinks which are actually green!
In addition to fighting climate change, seagrass roots prevent coastal erosion, act as nurseries for small marine animals, and improve water clarity by absorbing nutrients from land runoff.
Operation Posidonia is supported by citizen scientists who collect seagrass shoots which have been washed onshore. Once collected, they are washed, nourished in a nutrient bath, and then replanted by divers using special mats which allow them to reestablish roots in the ocean floor. Survival rates for replanted seagrass shoots has been an astonishing 90%!
Searches on Ekoru generate an income from sponsored search links. 60% of that income goes straight to our ocean partners. Every search now helps reforest our oceans and remove plastic waste.
Ekoru servers are located in green data centers powered by hydro-electricity. This minimizes your carbon footprint on the Internet and ensures that every web search is as green and eco-friendly as possible.
