Encounters of the Bird Kind
Gateway to being active, exploring, learning and experiencing awe
Note from the editor

Ordinary daily walks become extraordinary when we start birding. Beautiful birds are all around us but we see them only we are fully in the moment looking for the birds, noticing the rustling of leaves, and listening to their bird calls. In this digital age, there are so many great resources available to learn more about birds such as Cornell’s All About Birds Online References and Merlin mobile app(both Photo ID and Sound ID). There are so many facets to birdwatching — remarkable colors and shapes of birds, the varieties of birdsong from trills to screeches, movement of birds(flight, gliding on water, hopping on land, balancing on branches). And of course, our Bird Life List Quest not only motivates us to go for a walk every single day, it also facilitates more explorations (new parks and trails, new cities, countries and continents) to see rarer and migrating birds. There are many dazzling photographs of birds by accomplished bird photographers; however, our sighting, our experience, of hearing that bird sing, admiring its intricate patterns and hues, and marveling at its graceful movements, is unique. And it is even more magical when we have repeat encounters.
