The picture illustrating this article shows a worker installing solar panels on a roof, and that’s exactly what I’ve been seeing more and more of outside my window all morning. When, about a year ago, I finally decided to install solar panels, I was certainly one of the first in my neighborhood, but since then, I see new installations on more and more houses every week.

You might dismiss this as a casual observation, and not necessarily representative of any real trend. Except that the data suggests otherwise: global investment in solar installations exceeds that in fossil fuel production for the first time in history as more and more countries are speeding up a process that is arguably humanity’s greatest technological transformation.

Last year, the world built more solar generation capacity than all other energy sources combined, over one TW, a 20% annual growth rate already sustained for decades that means that by 2031, we will be generating 6TW per year. In terms of capacity, that is larger than…
