Fact

Dencun is a name given to the 2nd post-merge upgrade. It includes Deneb, the upgrade on the Consensus Layer, and Cancun, the upgrade on the Execution Layer, together aiming to improve overall network performance and user experience.

This upgrade brings back the Hardfork Meta EIP to the EIP repositories.

EIP-7569: Hardfork Meta — Dencun: This Meta EIP lists the EIPs included in the Dencun network upgrade across both Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers. It provides a global view of all changes included in the Dencun network upgrade, as well as links to full specifications.

Why It’s Interesting

Dencun is exciting primarily due to its promise to significantly enhance the scalability of the network. The introduction of “proto-dank sharding” with EIP-4844: Shard Blob Transactions to decrease transaction costs for layer-2 blockchains and achieve mass scalability through L2 rollups by reducing data availability costs is one of the key improvement proposals among 9 proposals included for the upgrade.

Context

Dencun also marks the “The Surge” phase with a goal of 100,000 transactions per second and beyond on Rollup as stated in Ethereum’s development roadmap 2024 by Vitalik Buterin. This will facilitate mass adoption via layer-two rollups, all without compromising on the decentralization and security of the network.

As announced earlier with the Shapellas upgrade, Dencun includes EIP-6780: Selfdestruct only in the same transaction. It also includes proposals for EVM improvements, to support smart contracts and improve beacon chain & staking.
