Ethereum Cat Herders Update #23
The Berlin upgrade, testnet YOLO, Eth2.0 version 0.12.1, and more.
Welcome to another issue of the ECH newsletter. We hope to help you catch up with what happened in the community since our last update.
Berlin Upgrade
Berlin is the next network upgrades for Ethereum. The upgrades proposed for Berlin are:
A subroutine is a sequence of instructions that perform a task. Subroutines are available in most virtual machines. With EIP-2315, subroutines will be a new feature for the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
BLS curves are a cryptographic feature requested for Eth2.0. BLS12–381 is useful for digital signatures and creating zero-knowledge proofs for private transactions. EIP-2537 will be used to facilitate the Eth2.0 deposit contract.
YOLO Testing Network
As a part of testing, the temporary testnet YOLO-v1 was launched earlier this month. YOLO contains the EIPs proposed for Berlin. What happens with YOLO will determine what goes live in Berlin.
Geth started first.
And OpenEthereum went live as well.
Hyperledger Besu is also in sync with YOLO.
The Ethereum clients with plans to join YOLO are Geth, OpenEthereum, Hyperledger Besu, Nethermind, and EthereumJS.
You can track the progress of each client on EIP-2657 Ephemeral Testnet Yolo. The EIP contains which clients intend to participate, if the clients agree with the designs, if the clients have the code ready, and if they are syncing.
Ethereum 2.0
Eth2.0 version 0.12.1 specifications where released, along with version 0.12.1 tests.
The Onyx testnet, with version 0.12.1, is now live.
