Why Zach Galifianakis Stopped Drinking

Bradley Cooper isn’t the only Hangover star who’s gotten sober.

Last month, I wrote an article about why Bradley Cooper had gotten sober. The actor quit drinking when he was just 29 years old. He said that his alcoholism had kept him “living in [his] head,” but sobriety had allowed him to finally connect with others.

When I wrote about Cooper, I mentioned that it was surprising to learn that the star who is arguably most famous for his role in the Hangover has spent most of his career alcohol-free. What I didn’t know at the time is that Cooper isn’t the only Hangover star to have quit drinking. It turns out that his costar, Zach Galifianakis, has left alcohol behind too.

Why Galifianakis Got Sober

Unlike Cooper, who quit drinking at a young age before his career took off, Zach Galifianakis didn’t stop until his forties, after his meteoric rise to fame in the Hangover movies.

In a 2013 interview with Conan O’Brien, Galifianakis opened up about his reason for quitting: “I was getting in too much trouble with the drinking stuff.” When asked if there was one thing that made him recognize that he had a problem, Galifianakis responded “This was about twenty things.”
