Response to “Features of emotional intelligence”

Since reflective listening is a broad skill-set, I like finding other skill sets that reflective listening relates to. The blog story “Features of Emotional Intelligence” written by Wenxin Yu, discusses the features of emotional intelligence. For those that do not know already, emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Wenxin Yu states “Emotional intelligence is the individual’s capacity to recognize the feelings and those of others, for motivating ours, managing emotions in ourselves as well as in the relationship with others. This also relates to my previous blog post on reflective listening in a hospital setting. In that blog, I went into detail about how recognizing your audience’s needs (families) can generate a more positive outcome for someone dealing with the death of a loved one.

My Thoughts

I enjoy the statement Wenxin Yu makes about an individual’s capacity to recognize the feelings and those of others. Since reflective listening is all about actively hearing what is being told to you, I think these two relate. If you are having a conversation with someone and are truly actively listening, you will be able to pick up certain signs regarding their attitude at the time. Nonverbal ques play a major role in reflective listening. Something as simple as an eye role can indicate a negative response from the speaker. The blog story makes it clear that emotional intelligence is crucial for maintain effective relationships, just as reflective listening is. Using these two skills together can generate very positive results and will help you advance in your career.
